I've already sent a message to MSN about this, but, I was wondering if anybody else had this problem...and solution:
I tried to download the chat program. I got a security warning that it was from an unknown publisher and wouldn't download...I'm running Windows XP and current on updates. The security warning was part of that service pack download awhile back. So I think this is funny. Microsoft not recognizing MSN.
Anyway I fooled around with my security settings but, didn't have any luck, especially since I don't know what I am doing. I don't want to have my computer completely vunerable, so does anybody know the fix for this. Thanks, Fan

I am having no problems with getting into the chatroom so I guess I can't be of any help. I have XP too.
I know that in the past at a different chatroom (non-MSN) I had problems because of my pop-up blocker.
Your problem does sound very stranger, Microsoft not recognizing a MSN download! I hope we can get this solved before the chat weekend!

Hi Desi. I'm having problems downloading the software. I'm not up to the step of getting into the chat room, yet. The first problem I had was the pop up blocker, which I disabled, then tried again only to get the security warning. Above, I wrote "The security warning was part of that service pack download awhile back." I meant security program, not security warning in this sentence. I haven't heard from MSN yet. I tried just now to download the program but, unfortunately it is not fixed. Thanks, Fan

For what it's worth, I have XP and I have successfully downloaded the program. I went there just now to download, but I got the smiley face (indicating a successful download) very quickly and it says if that happens I probably had it downloaded already. I know I didn't have it downloaded before this whole anniversary thing came up but I did go look at the Prancing Pony a few weeks back so that's probably when I had it downloaded.
So I don't think it's XP that's the problem.

Fan:
If I am not mistaken, MSN suggests that you bypass the security warning pop-up screen and move forward with the download. If you have already tried that maneuver without success, then try this link to our old Gandalf's Tutorials help page for the MSN site. There is a "Chatroom Fixes" tutorial there. The instructions are from 2002 but these instructions have helped several people fix the problems they had getting into the chatroom in the past.
I hope this might help. If not, I hope that MSN can find the answer for you.

It's not XP, per se. It has to do with the security program within XP. I tried to lower my security settings in "Internet Options" but it still won't let me download it. It isn't the Security warning they show on the chat page, that allows a yes or no. This one has no options. It simply won't allow the download. MSN wrote back and wanted more info...which is aggavating since I did write everything the first time. I reworded my letter and sent it back. We'll see. I'll check the tutorials. Thanks, Stormrider. Frustrated, Fan

Fan:
You might try to check from wherever that service pack came from to see if they can give you some suggestions, too.

I can find this kind of stuff very aggravating and, really... the help these companies offer is just lip service. When I couldn't get Mozilla's firefox browser to successfully interface with MSN groups, I asked for help and MSN said... it's not a Microsoft product and we won't support it. But when I had a problem that included all Microsoft products, I still couldn't get any help.
Good luck, Fanuidhol... I feel for you.

Well, unfortunately Gandalf couldn't help me. I also went to Microsoft but didn't see anything in their troubleshooting stuff. Before I write an E-mail to them, I'll see what MSN comes up with. Thanks Stormrider.
Thanks for the empathy, Magpie. Fan

My problem has been fixed. ;D MSN did help, but I had to fine-tune it to make it work. If anybody else has a problem, I'll gladly post the steps I had to take. Thanks and see you in chat, Fan

I am so glad that MSN came through for you, Fan! Good thing you looked into getting into the Chatroom early enough to discover you had the problem!
See you in Chat next weekend!

I don't know if this will help you. But, here is what MSN told me to do:
"Thank you for writing back to MSN Groups Customer Support.
This is Guildem and I understand that you are not able to install the MSN Chat Control.
I suggest that you try the procedures I have outlined below to see if it makes a difference, allowing you to install the MSN Chat Control.
Clear the temporary Internet files cache and the browser history in Internet Explorer.
1. On Internet Explorer, click "Tools". 2. Click "Internet Options". 3. Click the "General" tab. 4. Under "Temporary Internet Files", click "Delete Files". 5. Click "Delete all offline content", then click "OK". 6. Click "Settings". 7. Under "Check for newer versions of stored pages", select "Every visit to the page", and click "OK". 8. On the "General" tab, click "Clear History" under History, and click "Yes". 9. Click "OK".
Reduce your Internet Explorer security settings.
1. On Internet Explorer, click "Tools". 2. Click "Internet Options". 3. Click the "Advanced" tab and then scroll down to the "Security" section. 4. Clear the "Warn about invalid certificates" check box. 5. Click "OK". 6. Under the "Security" tab, click "Default Level." 7. Make sure that the slider is set to "Medium". 8. Click "OK". "
I had to put my security settings to low to make it work.
Hope this helps. Fan
PS. Were you signed in at MSN? I forgot to do that at first this morning.
