Thanks for the update!
Sigh, seems a LONG way off...
Maya Calendar has "End of the World" in Dec. 2112, so they better hurry up the productions or we are DOOMED!!!

Yikes! Maybe we should tell Guillermo and PJ to get going!
I imagine Alan Lee and John Howe are doing all of their drawings for the models and set designs and those must all be in the works along with costume designs and weaponry.

Desi and I finally saw Hellboy this week and are going to watch Hellboy II tonight. We both loved it! I like Superhero SciFi movies and this really was very good. The special effects were really cool and the makeup was done very well. So well, that I had to go to IMDb and click on each character to see what the actor really looked like! While looking up what some of the characters really look like, I came across this from IMDb: Cast of The Hobbit Ian McKellen ... Gandalf (rumored) Andy Serkis ... Gollum (rumored) Doug Jones ... (rumored) This is the guy who played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies. No mention of James McAvoy who we mentioned earlier in this thread as possibly having a role in The Hobbit. Addition: HellboyII was just as good as the first one. Not only do these movies have great special effects, great makeup and costumes, interesting characters, action and fighting, they have really funny punchlines. I am very impressed with Guillermo del Toro and can't wait for him to get going on The Hobbit Movie.

Yay! Glad you enjoyed the Hellboy movies. I am a big fan of Hellboy, both the films and the comics. It's really fantastic stuff for anyone who enjoys fantasy, folklore, and adventure fiction.
The rumor is that Doug Jones will be playing Thranduil, the Elvenking of Mirkwood (Legolas' father) in The Hobbit. It'd be awesome if they worked in a cameo for Legolas in that scene as well. He was presumably alive at that time and could have been among the Elves that captured Bilbo and the Dwarves.

Ah...Thranduil would be a good choice for Doug Jones, slender and willowy guy that he is! Where did you hear the rumor that Thranduil was the character he would play? Just wondering.
I wonder what happened to James McAvoy. I thought he was being considered for the role of Bilbo Baggins.
I am sure casting is in the works and many people are trying out for various roles. I wish we could see what is going on! It would be interesting to see how that process works. Do they apply make up to the actors/actresses for their readings to get an idea on how they will look?

I think Jones mentioned that he was being considered for Thranduil in an interview, though I don't remember where I read it.
I doubt they apply makeup during the auditions. Makeup jobs for fantasy movies usually take several hours. And at this stage, the makeup design may not even have been created. They probably just consider acting ability and personality during the casting stage.

That's true...but they could throw a beard on and wig just to get an idea how the person would look as his prospective character. Who knows..maybe the actor would look better as a different character than the one he/she is trying out for! But then again, the make-up people can really do some spectacular things these days and the casting staff probably has a very good eye for who will fit in what role.

Yes I did watch the Hell Boy movies and I enjoyed them a lot. The previews for first one must have not looked good or must have given me the wrong idea of the movie cuz I always thought it wasn't something I wouldn't like and then when I saw previews for the second I thought those look good! Glad I watched them. I downloaded digital versions for my boys to watch on our flight to Arizona over spring break!
