I was scanning the TR Fellowship Introductions thread and a thought occurred to me: What does a member's name mean to them? There is a reason that one chooses the username that one does. It may be as simple as "I liked that character in the books." But many of the names can not be explained that simply. So, if yer willin', let us know how you settled upon your moniker.
My username relates to my obsession (as many of you know from the thread that I started in the Art forum.) "Parma" = book, "asta" = month, "hir" = to find. Therefore literally "book of months finder" or calendar collector.
Away from The Green Hill Country,

Parmastihir: What a GREAT IDEA! Thanks for starting this thread. Well, my name "Stormrider" is nothing fancy. It has no Tolkienesque reference in it at all. My horse's name is Storm. Need I say more? If I had thought about it when I first signed up at the B&N LOTR class way back when, I would have chosen something Rohirrim.

Desi Baggins: At the time I joined TR my horses name was Desi (Red Hot Desire) and I love hobbits especially Bilbo Baggins...so that is how Desi Baggins came about!

I entered my real name into an online Hobbit Name Generator and "Fredegar Hornblower of Waymoot" is what it gave me. So it was a randomly generated phrase.
Afterwards, I researched the Hornblower family in Tolkien's works and discovered that they were the ones responsible for introducing pipe-weed to the Shire and that they are relations of Frodo Baggins (his great-grandmother was a Hornblower). This got the writer in me thinking and pretty soon I had a character-- a young hobbit who came from a respectable and wealthy Southfarthing family but secretly admired his adventurous Baggins cousins and wanted to follow in their footsteps.

What??? Ardo Whortleberry was my given name!!! ===
OK - Not really...
The Tolkien discussions were just beginning to get into full swing, (back over at the B&N site) about a year and a half ago (already yet) & I already had previously procured a psuedonym for all my posts to that site, but for the Tolkien discussions, I wanted to add a more "hobbit-y" name to my posts ( as others were also adding Tolkien-ish Pen Names ) ==
I believe ( at that time ) one correspondent had mentioned that same online Hobbit Name Generator that Fredegar mentioned here - but I decided to go ahead and construct my own Hobbit Name -
The "Ardo" intimates "ardent" ( which is what I desired to be, in my writings to the site ) The "Whortleberry" bit was something which I had come across in the Dictionary, and, as it was an "earthy", plant-derived name, ( as well as being a silly, humorous name) I decided to add it to the "Ardo" bit... ~~~

Hmmm Indeed a name can tell much, or nothing at all . my times these days are fille with caring for a terminally ill wife and college..I am working on a pair of Master's Degrees in the computer science and information systems technology...cant tell that from my rather wizardly name. But I also have a rather vivid imagination as evidenced by various writings I have posted in the past...They should still be available in the archives, I believe.... I am glad to be hee again and will try to entertain and be friend to all. Now , where is that Damn staff of mine? =) RM

Welcome back, RM! I'm sorry to hear. It must be very difficult for you and your wife.
I used to be known by another name in here. That one was taken from name generators. The current name is actually one of the characters in a tale that I'm writing. A legendary ancient dragon in that world's mythology. I choose to change since the new name is more mine than the generated one.

Androga:
How are you coming with your story? Are you thinking of publishing it? That would be awesome! You would be another TR member who is published.

Publishing isn't on my list in the near future, at least not for that tale. It's pretty lengthy, and I have only little time to write. That, combined with the few other stories that I'm writing simultaneously, things are going quite slow. When the time would come, in a few decades, I'll sure let you know (and have it translated as well ).
