Sunday, January 11, 2009I have migrated the old TR MSN Archive site over to Multiply.com It took 2-1/2 hours for the migration to complete. If you have an account with the old TR MSN site, then you should also receive a notice in your email that the migration has taken place. Here is the link: TolkiensRing.multiply.comIt is similar but rather odd. I am not sure how much can be "played with" and "manipulated" to make it easier to use. All the threads and forums seem to be merged together into just one forum. There is some order but there are so many pages to go thru, I can't tell how it is organized. Then again it may be my settings and I think that is set up by date as the default. Some images may be missing, too. At least when Feb. 2009 comes and goes, all our old stuff will be saved here. Stop in and take a look around. You will have to set up a new Multiply Account to get in. Let me know what you think.

Hi Stormie; so far with what i have had time to peruse, all the archives transfered over as blog posts. some of the images in the posts are gone (but i suspect they are gone from the archives too as people close web sites and move things all the time)
there is no way to get to the exact spot you want without just gestimating and start looking thru posts.
i might suggest that if anyone has some favorites in the archives that they go and transfer whatever information they may want.
i think i will try to work on the studies as i would hate to not have that readily available if we decide to do studies again?
(i need to look at what we transferred to this forum first to remember what we did or didn't do.)
the photo albums all seem to have transferred...i haven't looked through them all so i imagine there are some photos that are not there anymore too.
i will look more later
thanks for doing the transfer M

Excellent idea to visit the old MSN site before they delete it. I will leave it up until MSN deletes it themselves. I am not sure exactly what the last date that it will be there.
I think I should go save some of the studies questions. Good idea, Majah. I hope I have time!

another thing about the Multiple transfer...the posts are in order of date so most of the archive threads are now all mixed together and don't run in thread order.
i have started transferring the FotR Study into Word Documents and when i get them done, i will figure out the best way to post them.
i know we felt there was too much information to transfer at the time we moved to this forum so that is why we left them as archives.
if anyone else is going to transfer any threads, please post which ones here so we don't double up... thanks, M

RE Majah:
"if anyone else is going to transfer any threads, please post which ones here so we don't double up... thanks, M"
I'm copying the Adventures of Tom Bombadil poetry files, and the Entities of Arda files. I'll also copy the Beowulf Study and have them available for re-posting here.
I am having considerable trouble getting onto TR, the "server has timed out and may be busy" message keeps showing up so even this posting my not go through... If it does not post, I'll try again later.

I will work on the Two Towers and Return of the King Studies.
How are you copying everything? as a whole page or each post separately? I think it would be difficult to copy each separately. Maybe copy several posts at a time and re post them here.
There is also Megn's Silmarillion study at the Old site, too!
I will try to figure out how to open the Studies Forum to include all of these studies on it before we go and transfer everything back over here. It has been awhile since I've been in the administration section setting this forum up.

OK...I have created these Boards in the Study Forum so we can start copying the threads and posts into them. Silmarillion FOTR TTT ROTK Adv of Tom B Beowulf I've moved The Hobbit Study and Faerie Stories around to give it some order. We already have an Entities of Arda forum, so I guess any topics you pull off MSN can go into those boards where they belong. I don't know if we will have time to copy over all the Role Play Stories that we did--like Haysend. I think I have the entire Adv in ME copied to my pc somewhere and I hope I can find it. We should have done this ages ago when we first set up over here!

Hey Storm; what i was doing was copying each thread into my word program and then i will post those. if the thread is small enough they will be in one post, if longer i may divide them up some. i have kept the names ot the person who posted and have eliminated any duplicate posts or any "Yeah i agree." type of posts. it would probably be simpler to just copy and paste straight from from one forum to the next but i wanted to clean up some and take out the old MSN formatting. it doesn't bother me if we all do them differently, i am just happy to get them transferred... i will work on the MSN Sil study too. maybe Desi has time to do the RolePlays? and we always thought MSN would be there forever eh? Maj:
I created the new boards in the Studies forum. I found it was easier to copy directly from one forum to the next and edit as I went. I plan to bunch a couple of replies into each reply instead of posting each reply separate. I agree: keep the posters name and I left the date on there, too, and get rid of short non-meaninful posts.
Thanks for everyone's help. I will check with Desi on Role Plays and see what she says about helping. I had better go see if I have Adv in ME...I am sure I do! I am pretty sure it is on the memory stick that I took to work--I know I saw the words "Adv in ME" on one of them. Tomorrow I will check it out and bring it home.

i know Stormie...i started transferring this morning haha also, i would ask that everyone waits until we get everything moved before adding any comments...otherwise their posts would get lost in the middle of threads instead of on the ends. does that make sense? M

OK, I think that takes care of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil study, wow, what a nostalgic trip! Found all sorts of neat stuff I'll have to address later...
Up to swim some laps now, should get me in the mood for Beowulf tomorrow.
My thanks to all connected with this worthy salvage project!!!
Er, whot happened to Desi's knee? Nuttin' really serious, I hope!
Yeah, Majah, I agree we should not post to the old lines right away, may still want to do some cleaning-up. I notice the order comes out reversed, latest posted at top, but I guess that's alright, mirrors the way the threads appeared on the MSN site. Also some threads were set up on one date, but had additional posts much later so they are out of strict sequence...

Goodness Sakes! I've only gotten thru Wk 4, Bk 5, Ch 4 in the ROTK Study! Annie and I posted quite a few topics on each Chapter! No wonder we were so tired after it was all over. Me thinks it is going to take me a while to get it copied over. Andorinha: I agree--copying the old posts is a very nostalgic trip. Once it is complete, I'm going to have to go back and really take it all in again. I'm more going for copying and pasteing (why don't that look right?) it all into this forum before we lose it.
