Sutton Hoo is a series of burial mounds from the Anglo-Saxon period. The mounds were discovered in 1939, and the abundance of artifacts have provided an historical underpinning to the culture expressed in Beowulf. One of the major finds was an intact ship's burial. There were gold helmets, rings, coins and jewelry, silver utensils, weapons and a wealth of materials.
It is well worth looking at pictures of the site and the objects found and these are from the same time as when Beowulf supposedly took place, and are a great aid in visualizing the story. Look at:

Under the national trust site, you might want to read "Mrs. Pretty's Dream". A bit juvenile in writing style, the article tells the story of the discovery of Sutton Hoo.
Located on the South East corner of England in East Anglia (present day Suffolk), Sutton Hoo is about 75 crow-flying miles from London, 125 miles from Oxford. Now, I have found no reference to Tolkien's visiting Sutton Hoo, but its discovery was a big deal at the time, and being an Anglo-Saxon scholar I am sure he was aware of it, and probably quite excited as the discovery continued. To give a time perspective: Tolkien gave his talk "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" in 1936. Sutton Hoo was discovered in 1939. Objects from the site were put in the British Museum after World War II, and I wonder if Tolkien (who enjoyed museums and art shows) ever got to see the collection. I think he would have been delighted.
