Here is my proposal for how we proceed in following this schedule.
1. Readings will be completed by the date listed.
2. I will try to post discussion questions a day or two before Sunday, to encourage discussion. Anyone else is invited to post discussion questions.
3. WE WILL TRY TO AVOID SPOILERS! There are surprises and plot twists, and hidden gems to be uncovered. Let's not spoil the experience of discovery for first time readers. I admit that on B&N, and in previous discussion here, I have been guilty of discussing things which should have been left for others to discover on their own. I'm sorry. Let's all commit to not doing that, so this is a safe place for all readers.
4. All opinions, ideas, reflections are welcome. Sometimes first time readers have insights that the re-readers miss. Let's try to keep ourselves open to the contributions of all.
5. Anyone is welcome to join the discussion. But I hope you will sign on as one of our reading group, so that we will know who is on the journey with us.
Comments? Input? Changes you would like to make.

Megn:
I appreciate your proposed schedule for reading Sil. I think your offer of posting discussion questions will make reading more meaningful.
I also wanted to say that as a first-time Sil reader, I appreaciate all of the work that has gone into creating a syllabus, as well as the other aids and suggestions made. It has helped decrease my level of intimidation remarkably.
I'm looking forward to April 14th!
Hilary

Oooops. Mis-typed that schedule. DaleAnn originally put it together, but listed it as week one, week two, etc, since at that point dates weren't set. I added the dates, but got it wrong. HERE is the schedule:
April 14---Ainulindale, Valaquenta
April 21---Quenta Silmarillion, chap.1-6.
April 28---Quenta Silmarillion, chap 7-11
May 5---Quenta Silmarillion, chap.12-16
May 12---Quenta Silmarillion, chap.17-18
May 19---Quenta Silmarillion, chap.19-20
May 26---Quenta Silmarillion, chap. 21-22
June 2---Quenta Silmarillion, chap. 23-24
June 9---Akallabeth
June 16--Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age

Hi megn...
Thank you so much for posting the schedule and process. I must agree with
Hilary...the aids, suggestions and posting of discussion questions are greatly
appreciated and will make this reading a whole lot easier. You and DaleAnn have done an incredible job and I am most grateful to both of you.
As far as your comment #3 regarding spoilers in messages already posted...as a Tolkien newborn, I have read so much recently that my mental desk is cluttered and my filing cabinets are in slight disaray. At this point
EVERYTHING is new to me...even if I've heard it before, so don't any of you beat yourselves up on my account!

Hi...I have been reading and my head has spun round so many times Ifeel like a stool at a lunch counter!...but I'm holding on.
I had one thought...if questions were posted earlier in the week, it would structure reading a little. I was just thinking that it might help to keep first time readers focused. I appreciate the fact that you are doing this at all and shouldn't be looking a gift horse in the mouth!

Soleil,
Is it the Valaquenta that is causing your head to spin? If so, just stop reading it! Come back to it sometime later. Check the file I posted on the documents board (under misc.) called Valar.doc. If you can't open it, let me know. It is a summary of Valaquenta.
I'll try to post something helpful about the Music of the Ainur later.

Actually, it was Ainulindalë which almost caused me to say "uncle"! However, I have this stubborn streak and I stuck with it...just not sure how much of it stuck with me! I was whining to a friend and she found some reviews of the book on Amazon. One person gave a brief, but concise summary of the book and that helped.

I have this copied and it is a great help. Thanks for doing it!
