I am 64 years old & did not read the trilogy until shortly before the movies came out even tho a friend had urged me to do so for at least 15 years before that! So I've become a Tolkien addict fairly recently compared to some. I live in Eastern Washington state, I am a substitute school teacher w/history & Earth Science majors I had read non-fiction only for many years before I discovered Middle Earth!!! So now I'm exploring the many worlds of fantasy! Right now I am rereading the Trilogy (for the 3rd time) slowly, in order to pick up on some of the details that got by me before. I'm almost through w/TTT now. I've also read Author of The Century & part of Letters, UT & a little of Splintered Light. But I believe I will simply have to have a go at the Sil next (then I'll get back to all those others which are piled on my bedside table). Any way I have some things I'll share w/ those of you on this board! Thank you, Vanye TEXT P.S. did I mention that Marilynn sent me!! ;D TEXT

Hello Vanye: It is good to see that you made it past the registration process! It is funny that you said that you have read many other fantasy books but never read LOTR until just before the movies came out even though a friend had urged you to do so for years! I, on the other hand, have read no other fantasy except for JRRT! Some people have said that Tolkien is much more difficult to read and understand than many of the other fantasy tales out there. I find that hard to believe because I have loved it since 1969 when I first read it. What is so difficult about it?! I guess I should try sampling some of the other fantasy books out there to see for myself. Anyway, a friend lent me A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony. Marilynn/Magpie did tell me you were interested in joining Tolkien's Ring. Welcome!

Welcome, Vanye. I'm glad you found your way here. You want suggestions for other fantasy, Stormrider? Can I recommend my favorite (next to LOTR) fantasy? It's War for the Oaks by Emma Bull. Now I may be completely prejudiced because it takes place in the Twin Cities and many of the locations are dear to my heart. I even have a little 'web site' that has pictures of lots of the locations (I put the word in quotes because it's a webbed html document but it's not on the internet since it uses too many copyrighted pictures... but if you were interested, I could get you a copy somehow.) If you don't mind discounted books (with the big, black stripes on them) you can get it cheap HERE: www.bookcloseouts.com/default.asp?Ntk1=Default&Ntt1=emma+bull&Ntx1=matchall&Nsl=0&Ix=2&R=0765300346B&Rt=3&Nty1=1

Welcome to TR Vanye!
I have read only Tolkien as far as fantasy goes (unless you consider half of a Star Wars book fantasy). Otherwise I read suspense/thriller stuff.
We will be finishing up the Hobbit study in January, but the tpoics are laways open for discussion. You may want to read through the study and add some of your thoughts. Also for fun take part in the polls!!!

Greetings, Vanye! Let me add my "welcome" to the chorus.
I see you are already posting some excellent "discussion-starters" at The Two Towers venue -- regarding some of which I think we are going to find no definitive answers, but the searches should be fun anyway!
Hope you enjoy TR!
