Hi, I'm Fanuidhol, otherwise known as Cloudyhead. The pun is very intentional as I'm sure you will notice eventually. You may call me "Fan". I've been wandering around the Internet looking for another discussion board since the one I frequented kinda went belly up (as far as I was concerned). I've been lurking here for over a month getting a feel for the place and reading your archived material at MSN. I am impressed with your literature studies. I seem to remember hearing about your group somewhere before, but I can't remember where -- see what I mean about Cloudyhead? I am the proud owner of a hobbithole in Southwestern Missouri. Unfortunately, our doors and windows are rectangle, not round. Very easy and cheap to heat and cool, anyway. Looking forward to joining in good discussions. Thanks for letting me join, Fan

Welcome Fan. Did you ever take a class at Barnes and Noble University... Tolkien's Ring was usually 'advertised' there... that is, participants in the class were invited to check out the site and join.

Hi, Magpie. I heard about Barnes and Noble University from TORN awhile back but they had closed the session by the time I got there. I went back there just now Apparently they don't have any Tolkien classes starting. I did see some other interesting classes that I am debating about taking. I am perilously close to biting off more than I can chew, though. Fan

Welcome Fanduidhol,
Glad to have you join our group. The Hobbit Study is about to begin again after the long holiday recess. Desi will post so topics for discussion tomorrow. I hope you find the studies exciting and stimulating enough for your taste!
I am looking forward to seeing you posting on the boards!

Hi Fanduidhol! I'm new pretty new here myself. Nice to see I'm not the only forum "newbie," so to speak. See you around the boards.

Welcome to Tolkien's Ring! So glad you checked us out and decided we are a worthy site to try out! We really try to keep some discussions going no matter how small or big!

Greetings, Fanuidhol!
A month (or two) ago we were discussing whether or not the "Tolkien Phenomenon" had reached its peak, at least in terms of online sites. Seems that a lot of formerly expressive JRRT forums have noticed a decided drop in participation this last year. Two of the Tolkien joints I used to haunt have become ghostly places indeed.
TR does have its slack periods -- only 62 members so far, all of whom suffer periodic, Real Life inroads on their net appearance time -- so the addition of new members is especially welcome. But, even though it is a relatively small place, TR still seems rather lively. It has a core of boisterous, long-term posters who apparently cannot find proper day jobs to otherwise fill their "empty" hours. So, whatever your particular, favorite topics, the discussion lines here are highly diverse, flexible, occasionally amusing, and (perhaps) even educational. Jump right in!

Thanks, All, for the welcome. Andorinha, I do understand the ebb and flow of Internet communities, which can especially be felt in smaller ones. The flavor of my old board had changed drastically. So that coupled with a drop-off in quality and quantity compelled me to look for somewhere I could hang my hat. Part of what attracted me to Tolkien's Ring was the intimacy of a smaller board that contained adults that type out their words. I do frequent some of the "monster" boards with thousands of members, but just to lurk. I'm a bit intimidated by them. Thanks, Fan

Hello Fanuidhol and welcome!
what you said here in this quote is why i have come to realize i am involved with TR...
we are a small but very devoted group here. Fans, yes but deep core fans of the whole Tolkien world! (and as Andorinha said sometimes a bit caught up in Real Life concerns.) but we feel great that we are celebrating a 3rd anniversary soon and that we continue on!
so welcome and i look forward to reading your insights on our study boards. Majah
