In this chapter we gain insights into a number of characters, including the Ring. Excluding those that we would like to track, what have you discovered about the personalities of the characters? DA
I think at this point in the story, character development is very vague. As far as the Hobbits, we can observe an innocence that knows little danger or next to nothing concerning events of the outside world. It is obvious that the Hobbits represent human characteristics at this time. Gandalf is a bit of an enigma ... he still maintains his "I'm something more than I seem" that he alluded to in The Hobbit". It's still up for debate as to how powerful this entity is. Evil has definitely not been developed yet. Everything evil, thus far, is ... mysterious. We do not yet know what horrors lie ahead of us in the story. Of course, this is AN opinion! Algamesh
I read the Hobbit before reading LotR, so when I started reading LotR I was expecting another fun journey. Then I got to chapter 2 The Shadow of the Past, that is when I realized this story would be different with a great evil. The fun of the the Hobbit characters would soon turn into something more, I didn't know what for sure but I could tell there would be change. Gandalf's character became more serious and you could tell there was real power in him. Desi
