I have been in a panic over this chapter since I first decided to be discussion leader. "What in the world could I possibly say about Tom Bombadil that hasn't been said before?" Then yesterday, my 13 year old daughter and I were talking about the boy she likes at school. She and her friends have "code names" for the boys they like so they can speak freely, (even in front of them.) Her boy is "Tom Bombadil". I began wondering why she chose TB instead of any of the hunks or almost hunks from the movie. Even she could not answer the question. I re-read the chapters and it hit me like a 2x4. The next paragraph is going to sound a bit sappy and personal, so pass it up if you don't think you can stomach it.
TB expresses his love for Goldberry in real, physical, tangible ways. He brings her flowers and comes home every night. My daughter witnesses this kind of love on a daily basis in our home. I have often told my children that it's the little expressions of love that mean the most. My husband, on the way home from a hard days work, will often stop on the side of the road to pick flowers for me. (He'll even risk the Orcs on the GSP.) I often go out of my way to pick up little gifts for him...usually a particular kind of cookie or a Heath bar (not Skor). He comes home directly from work because he wants to be home with me and I'm standing there at the door with a big smile on my face because I'm happy to see him...
and we laugh together...
DA
There is something very special about the relationship of Tom and Goldberry, isn't there? "Yet in some fashion they seemed to weave a single dance, neither hindering the other..." They respect each other as different beings, work together closely as a pair and obviously care very much for each other. How very romantic!
