"Well, one can't be everywhere at once, I suppose," he said. "But I missed a lot, seemingly."
But a reader can. Be everywhere at once, that is. It seemed strange to me that the Ents, who have already become beloved characters to the readers, are not known to Sam and Frodo until now. Sam does wonder at Merry and Pippin’s height. Do you think they wonder how they might get a drink of this seemingly magical drought?
The hobbit companions are eager to share their stories with one another. What news do Merry and Pippin pass on to Frodo and Sam? Do you think the ring bearers are surprised by their friends’ adventures, exploits, and stories of valor? Sam and Frodo see their friends dressed as Knights of the city but Pippin says, "We are knights of the city and of the Mark, as I hope you observe." (Boldface, mine) Why do you think Pippin says this? Does he think that perhaps Sam and Frodo will doubt their valor?

From: Desi-Baggins Sent: 6/3/2003 9:16 AM Orcs, and talking trees, and leagues of grass, and galloping riders, and glittering caves, and white towers and golden halls, and battles, and tall ships sailing, Those are the tales Merry and Pippin told Frodo and Sam. I don't think Frodo and Sam imagined that everyone else in the Fellowship did much after the split. After seeing Strider as King they knew there was much to tell. I think that even though Merry and Pippin have grown up alot they still like attention and with Frodo and Sam coming back their defeats were shadowed a bit. So that is why Pippin lets Sam know that they are knights, a way to get some attention. I don't Sam and Frodo doubted their valor but were surprised that so much went on aside from their tale! Desi
