Wk10, Bk6, Ch4, SUMMARY: The Field of Cormallen
The Captains of the West were overwhelmed by the onslaught. At that moment Gandalf, looking to the sky, saw the Eagles and cried out, "The Eagles are Coming," which was repeated by others. As the immense army of eagles led by Gwaihir descends upon the Nazgul, a cry was heard from the Black Tower. The Nazgul swiftly retreated. In that very moment the Ring fell into the fire of Orodruin and the Black Gate collapsed. The spirit of Sauron was destroyed and the forces, bereft of the power that controlled them, were overcome with fear and confusion. Many ran away or threw down their weapons suing for mercy. A few stood and fought but were quickly conquered.
Gandalf pleaded with Gwaihir, to carry him to Orodrin to rescue the hobbits leaving Aragorn and the armies to finish the battle. They were accompanied by two other eagles. Just as the heroes were about to be swept away by the flowing lava, they were scooped up and flown to safety.
Frodo and Sam awoke several days later surprised but happy that Gandalf is truly alive. They were honored by the King and the host of the West. A minstrel of Gondor sings of the nine fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom.
Later Frodo and Sam were brought to a tent where Gandalf presented them with their elven cloaks and weapons to wear at the banquet. He also returned the gifts of the Lady; Sam’s Box and Frodo’s phial.
The heroes sat at the King’s table where they were reunited with Merry, Pippin, Gimli and Legolas. A feast was provided and they celebrated the fall of Sauron and the coming of Spring. Later Frodo and Sam swap stories with Merry and Pippin. Sam is amazed at Merry and Pippin's height and wondered what an Ent was. Gimli informed Pippin that it was he who had heaved the troll off him and pulled him away. Legolas walked off alone into the woods singing his Song of the Sea. Finally they all went off to their beds to sleep.
After spending many days in Ithilien, they returned to Minas Tirith where Aragorn set up his pavilions on the Pelennor. In the morning the King would enter the gates.
