Sam and Rosie (ROTK movie PIC)
Wk13, Bk6, Ch8, DISCUSSION: Sam and Rosie
Several times before Sam returned to the shire, his thoughts were of Rosie. Can you identify some of the events that brought images of Rosie to mind? The most vivid one for me was when they were in Mordor and Sam realized that there would be no return.
" So that was the job I felt I had to do when I started . . . To help Mr. Frodo to the last step and then die with him? Well if that is the job then I must do it. But I would dearly love to see Bywater again, and Rosie Cotton and her brothers, and the old Gaffer and Marigold and all."
Rosie’s thoughts had been of Sam while he was away. I found it interesting that everyone around her believed that he had died and Rosie said to Sam, "They said you were dead but I’ve been expecting you since spring." How do you think Sam must have felt to hear Rosie tell him that she had been expecting him? And then as she sent him off, she said, ". . . Come straight back as soon as you have settled the ruffians."
When Frodo tells the Old Gaffer how brave Sam had been and that songs were being sung about his deeds, Samwise blushes. What made Sam blush? Was it because it was difficult for him to see himself as a hero? I wonder if it might have been because Rosie’s eyes were shining and she was smiling at Sam?
What qualities in Sam do you think Rosie was attracted to? What was it about Rosie that brought thoughts of her as he crossed Mordor? At this point in the story, did you, like me, hope that this relationship would develop further? Do you think they would make a good match? Why? Well, we will have to wait until the next chapter to see what happens . . .
