Tolkienites!
Anyone feel like having a poetry contest? Here's what I propose ...
I will present an event from the Annals of Arda and anyone who would like to participate would then construct a poem concerning or related to the event presented. The poem should be no more than 12 lines in length.
If this seems like something that would be fun to do ... leave a replies here. I'll set down a topic for a September contest if it looks like we have enough interest! Also, at this time I'll flesh out the guidelines and deadlines ...

Sounds great. I'm picturing the proposed contest being held in the Hall of Fire at Rivendell. TR members gathered near the fire (its pouring rain outside), rhyming and singing together; Elves, ladies of Rohan, a tall elf lord (Brad Pitt?, no wait....its Glor) talking to a Ranger, a sparrow on the widow sill, perhaps a dragon, wizards mad or otherwise, and several hobbits bowing their heads (purely out of sleepiness) intermittenty during a digression on traditional Entish poetic devices.....
It would be fun to see what people come up with, anyway. I know there are some talanted people, hobbits, elves, creatures, etc. about. I'll try as well, but poetry is hard!

Oh, a monthly contest sounds good because it would allow some time to come up with something. I know many are going to be busy. Also, I believe I left some out of the list. We've also an over large spider in our midsts, and some Nazgul. Not sure how they will fit in the Hall of Fire.......

Even though I have never tried to write any poetry nor have ever studied it (other than thru our Tom Bombadil study), I would be willing to give the contest a try. A month would give me plenty of time to struggle with it as I attempt to try my skills in creating something! Maybe I will even learn something new! Good idea, Algy!

My first reaction was to say "I'm not a poet!" (Which I'm not.) But then I realized that TR has brought out a latent poetic side in me more than once. The only poems I have written since I was in high school have been on this board.
So go ahead! Have the contest. I will give it a try. The stuff I produce won't be good, but the process will stretch me.
Maybe I'll even try to get my daughter to write a poem for the contest. Now SHE is a poet (don't know where she got it), but I have a terrible time figuring out how to encourage her to write more. About every six months she sits down and produces something that blows me away. Maybe TR will provide her the incentive she needs...

This sounds like great fun! I would love to try my hand at poetry.
Thus far, I have only written bad ditties, fodder for Megn to dissect in terms of rhyme scheme!
Please don't throw anything at me, I am only a very small bird.

Algy, could we not be a little more generous with the line allowance? Twelve lines of twelve words each is a tad brief, eh? Is it poetry by the gross? Are ya lookin' for limericks? After all, just a simple sonnet is 14 lines. A villanelle is 16. What's a poor poet to do?

LOL: Throwing a side-long look at Sparrow, who takes no harm from this insubstantial missle, I must beg for your indulgence here, Algamesh! A 12 X 12 poem (a "gross" versification?) lacks the dimensions required for REAL expression! As Olorie tells it, unless this is a waka / haiku / jingle contest... more lines, more words, please? (I am not a participant so you need fear no three part epics!)

Well I managed to only max out at 9 words per line, but I have 16 lines. I had forgotten to pay attention to the rules till after I posted. But I felt they weren't so much rules, as they were an attempt to avoid tons of Ballads. Could you imagine if 10 people wrote 10 poems the length of say "Charge of the Light Birgade". Could be most daunting. For myself I have always assumed rules are guidelines that can be fudged on so long as your not blatent but after reading your post about length I must admit I'm a tad worried I don't think I could shorten mine any. What say you Noble Dúnadan of Arnor? Just as Bibo needed the Dúnadan to solve his poetry delemma in Rivendel we now seek your sage counsel in this matter.
Namárië,

Wow!
Sorry guys that I missed this request ... and now, I answer much too late I guess. Iarwain is right ... I was only presenting guidelines to avoid Epics. For the October contest, please don't destroy your verse to stay within the proposed rules. I only present them to keep the poems of a similar length for ease of judging. If you must use 16 lines, so be it!

And what is the October topic? It took me all month long to write less than a gross (12x12) poem!

I will post the October Poetry topic tonight following my post about the Sept. Contest Winner. You guys still have time to cast ballots for who you think has the best Sept. poem. Just email me your ballots to syper_edwards@msn.com. Please remember that there is an underscore between "syper" and "edwards". I will accept nominations up until the time that I choose to post the winner so get them to me ASAP today. I imagine I will be posting the winner and the new topic sometime around 11PM EST. this evening.
