Maybe because it's spring, maybe because it's a tip of the hat to our new manager-goddesses, maybe it's just because the month is April, which also starts with A. The 'because' is open to your interpretation, as is this month's topic:
Art in Arda
Tolkien's works are rich in art. Take us there! Perhaps you'll paint with words. Perhaps you'll write about a work of art, or the art of life. Perhaps you'll write about an artist, or a race of artists (even Hobbits are artists in their own way); perhaps you'll explore the creative spark from his, her, or their perspective. Those are just a few of the possibilities -- look to your own inner spark and show us what you find.
Your poem may be on any aspect of the topic; it may be written from any perspective. It can relate to the topic directly, or approach it in a roundabout way. Use your creativity and share your vision!
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on April 30. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The poems will be judged by Friend votes after the close of the contest.
No length guidelines, although the "No Epics, please" rule still holds.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: Please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the poems until after the closing date. You can, of course, send your encouragement privately in an email or mention it in chat.
ANOTHER NOTE: If you plan to participate in this contest, you may wish not to read the rest of this thread before you submit your own poem. It might affect your ability to remain "original." Then again, you may be able to draw inspiration from seeing others' work. It's your choice!
Have fun, and GO !!!

What is the art of the Elven kin?
Poets work, as light as air.
Songs of history, sad but fair,
Pale as memory, for they're not there,
The singers are gone away, away.
Gone to the west, and far away.
Lovely the songs, half reFriended in dreams;
Faded the words, but dim memories live.
Where is the art of the Dwarven lords?
Carven from stone, from veins of ore.
Graven, and shaped, and formed with care,
Gleaming in metal, and shining gems.
Set in the walls of the deepening mines,
Riven from marble, and onyx, and gold,
And wonderous fair, so fair, but lost, lost,
Lost in the darkened caverns there.
Where is the art of the Lords of Men?
Shaped from iron and stone and wood,
It stands, remains, fades into normalcy,
All about us, it lives, yet dies,
For it stands day by day, year by year,
So normal before our eyes.
And the glory recedes into everyday,
Into "ordinary," the loveliness declines.
Where is the art of the Darkened Ones?
Living in nightmares, dark and grim,
Hiding in shadow, again, again,
To catch us unaware again.
The blood and the horror beyond our ken,
Past fear and terror, oh, so strong,
Til it grows to an art of death and wrong,
Of war and hate and graceless night.
And the one art all did share?
Dark Lord and shining Elf,
Stalwart Dwarves and mortal Men?
Not poesy, nor rising song,
Not painted glory nor sculpted form.
The single Art they all shared, all;
The Weaponsmiths of all were grand,
And blood was there, on every hand.
Where is the art?
In the tears and the mind,
In dreams, both dark and light,
Living in soul and heart,
Still living in soul and heart.

Art In Nature
Alfirin a small white flower
Ringlo brings flowing power
Trees of silver and gold
Ithildin the starmoon so bold
Nimloth the white flowing tree
Anor the sun shining free
Remmirath netted stars that shine
Dorthonion land of the pine
Athelas with sweet aroma
The nature art of Arda

This is about swords, but I collect swords as art, so I think it applies. I'll leave it for the judges to decide.
Iarwain
Anglachel and Anguirel
Fire flows from my skin as I fall swiftly to Arda’s surface,
A wandering star, cast from heavens far, servant of destinies purpose;
Though bright once was I, while apart of the sky,
In Nan Elmoth I become part of Darkness;
By Eöl was I found, mined from the ground, and with fire fashioned into We,
Though our edges shone bright, giving hope for the light, darkened heart had forged thee;
Once together now apart, our fates now would start,
And to our masters become part of Darkness;
Of Eöl I exist! Of Eöl I exist
Stolen by Maeglin I resist. Given to Thingol I was a gift.
In serving Gondolin’s Slew I Beleg,
fall with Dark hearted Son and eagerly I drank Turin's blood.
And at First Ages end, We fall once again, to the bottom of Ulmo’s Realm,
Forgotten relics of war, littered about by the score, spear, shield, and helm;
Once apart now reunited, where Sun never lighted,
We remain always part of Darkness;

Legacy
The tales of old of Middle Earth are set in stone and ink and paint;
When men and memory have passed, the noble images remain.
Hard labor certainly it was to carve from rock likenesses true;
Still standing tall to witness bear, the forms remind us what they knew.
Participants in history have served their cause and gone from reach,
Yet verse and rhyme record their tale and still today their lessons teach.
What words cannot convey, paintings their wordless testimony give;
Remote adventures boldly memorialized in vivid hues still live.
The heroes brave have gone to Mandos, but the ancient lore still stands,
Remembrance and a beacon gives, links old to new as hand in hand.

Mirror on Middle Earth
Pour the water and breathe upon
A picture of life that's come and gone
And all the future there is to see
The visions in water are yet to be
A friends' dear face, lined with grief
The wilting of a Willow's leaf
The bright blue eyes of Lordly Elf
And Samwise' loyal giving self
These pictures pass before my eyes
The Art of Arda makes me wise
Inside my lingering heart I fear
These images hold life so clear
The light of Star-kindler from afar
Leads us to crossroads where we are
Challenged by Ring and Spider and Wraith
Swirling sights that challenge my faith
Pictures of Middle-earth hold sway
Of how I live from day to day
Not even a threat of going blind
Can erase these pictures from my mind
For here is a world that pierces heart
Surpasses all my visions of art
A texture so rich that I can touch
A picture inside me I love so much

Oh, poets, these are mighty fine works -- and as the April 2003 poetry contest is now closed, we readers have our own work cut out for us in choosing our favorites. But never fear, we are up for the challenge!
OK, gang, our poets are depending on us -- our votes are their reward. Fortunately for all us busy folk, it's easy to vote: Just send me an email. Get the address by clicking on my underlined name at the top of this post. Indicate your choices for first, second, and third place.
Votes are due by Thursday night at midnight (an hour past eleven p.m. on April 8). I'll tabulate the votes and post the results on Friday. If anyone has any questions in the meantime, just email me.
The winners will receive a prize ribbon sig file which they will have the right to display in each of their posts through the end of May.
Poets, congratulations again on this great work; now c'mon everyone, let's VOTE!

the reason i can take partial credit for this month's poem is kinda a looooong story but i will try to be brief..he he
i was whining about how i could draw or paint my views of the topic but my words would not match the pictures in my head...and shazam! i wrote this following poem.
when Fang and i decided to link up, he read my poem and alternating between laughing, gagging and not getting my in jokes, he became filled with the poetry muse and dashed off to make the masterpiece you see above. and then the idea for the animated mirror just fell into place after that!
but because i did write this special for this contest, i decided to post it after the contest was over...
so now for your viewing pleasure?

foreward: To me…every bit of the worlds of JRR is ART! And I know that if I had 1/1000th of the old man's talent, I would be the greatest artist…on the planet!
'Hmmmm Art in Arda?'
The tired Majah thought
'A poet I ain't, but in Art,
I should have what it's got!
Maybe I can paint a poem
Of a world rich and fair,
Full of light, beauty and passion
Maybe 'highlight'* Galadriel's hair? (*Yes…this is the IN joke cause I do hair!)
A solemn wizard and
A hobbit full of charm,
A sad elven maiden...or wait…
An Orc who lost his arm!!!
Yes, I CAN paint battles and mountains
And nasty Gollum trickses,
But when it comes to writing about them
I stifle quit a bit…ses?
I know Olorie planned this topic
For people such as I
To loose the pictures in our heads
And make poetic words appear on nigh.
Well it ain't workin' girl!
So I chose another route
A picture's worth a thousand words
So here…YOU count them out!'

Majah!
Where have I been?!?! This collage is beautiful! I just love it! But I have to admit, I am not sure who everyone is! That is only because some of them are a little small for me to get a good look at their features.
You can tell that the Friends of Tolkien's Ring are very colorful characters just by looking at your painting. A gathering of TR Friends in Middle Earth attire would be a very spectacular event well worth seeing! Now I know why Iarwain loves those festivals he attends!
I would love a poster of this! Does it come in poster sizes at the TR Store! I would snatch one up right away!
