Some of the best poetry subjects come up in chat, and that's certainly the case with this month's topic, which is also timely for several reasons: because participants in our RotK study are just approaching this event; because June is a traditional month for weddings; and because on the day of Midsummer, one wedding in particular took place:
The Wedding of Aragorn and Arwen
For your entry, you might paint the scene with words or write the couple a wedding song. You might describe the event as the fulfillment of things past or a prelude of things to come. Or you might relate it to something else altogether -- it's your choice and your direction. As usual, your poem may be on any aspect of the topic; it may be written from any perspective. Use your creativity and share your vision!
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on June 30. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The poems will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
No length guidelines, although the "No Epics, please" rule still holds.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: Please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the poems until after the closing date. You can, of course, send your encouragement privately in an email or mention it in chat.
ANOTHER NOTE: If you plan to participate in this contest, you may wish not to read the rest of this thread before you submit your own poem. It might affect your ability to remain "original." Then again, you may be able to draw inspiration from seeing others' work. It's your choice!
Have fun, and GO !!!
Tolkien's description is below for those who don't have a copy of LotR handy; also because his beautiful language may inspire someone:
Upon the very Eve of Midsummer, when the sky was blue as sapphire and white stars opened in the East, but the West was still golden and the air was cool and fragrant, the riders came down the North-way to the gates of Minas Tirith. First rode Elrohir and Elladan with a banner of silver, and then came Glorfindel and Erestor and all the household of Rivendell, and after them came the Lady Galadriel and Celeborn, Lord of Lothlórien, riding upon white steeds and with them many fair folk of their land, grey-cloaked with white gems in their hair; and last came Master Elrond, mighty among Elves and Men, bearing the sceptre of Annúminas, and beside him upon a grey palfrey rode Arwen his daughter, Evenstar of her people.
And Frodo when he saw her come glimmering in the evening, with stars on her brow and a sweet fragrance about her, was moved with great wonder, and he said to Gandalf: 'At last I understand why we have waited! This is the ending. Now not day only shall be beloved, but night too shall be beautiful and blessed and all its fear pass away!'
Then the King welcomed his guests, and they alighted; and Elrond surrendered the sceptre, and laid the hand of his daughter in the hand of the King, and together they went up into the High City, and all the stars flowered in the sky. And Aragorn the King Elessar wedded Arwen Undómiel in the City of the Kings upon the day of Midsummer, and the tale of their long waiting and labours was come to fulfilment.

How now then?
How shall we thus proceed, so unknowing?
How shall we proceed so unworthy?
How deep the despair and the guilt?
How long before it gives us rest?
When will the riddles be answered
When will the time come to hand?
When will the time be awoken
When will this make me a man?
Who is the answer to this riddle
Who is it I must protect
Who is the focus of creation
Who is it I must respect?
The answer comes slow and unwanted
Not the desired effect
But given my vantage among you
My answer is always correct
How I love you is obvious, my heart is always displayed
When will you come to love me? We wait forever and that day
Who is the one who loves you? Surely you must jest
Love me sweet, my lover, or stop the pounding in my chest
Arwen Undomiel, Evenstar of my life
The one that I take here for my wife
Here and forever, through ages unknown
Love me for all time
or leave me alone

Estel Undomiel
What choice my neo-Tinuviel?
Which path my lovely Undomiel?
A chance meeting in Undying Lothlorien.
Was it kindness or fate?
Will you choose early or late?
True sprig of Elros many times removed
Orhaned at the tender age of two
Fostered by your forefathers brother
To dare to challenge any height to wish upon a star
the last Estel for mankind your duty like a yoke
Chains you to yet you wont be chained from your
paradise on earth.
What many faceted power?
What overwhelming force?
Once Eru let it free to roam
Nothing can change its course
The Valar, Elves, Dwarves and Men
Must bow down for a day, a lifetime, or for a least an hour
and be comforted in its arms and healed by its kiss.
Its wonderful to see that even in fantasy,
LOVE can make a mortals Hope come true
While wishing upon the Eveningstar.

Here is poem I'm entering last minute, I guess you would call it that. Fangorn caught me online and helped me alot with this one. He left me hanging to finish it on my own! I hope he likes my ending!
Arwen's Wedding Day
Arwen Evenstar,
The light of the earth,
Her gown is made of both Mithril and mirth.
And in between her tresses we see,
The world of men or how it is to be.
Arwen Evenstar,
Dark star of the earth,
Looking like magic, beauty and great worth.
And her veil flowing like the sea,
She leaves behind the Grey Havens to live with thee.

i crashed and fell asleep last night and did not wake in time to enter my poem but since i had actually written one amid the dust and mess of the remodeling, i did still want to post it! (and on a happier note...i showered last night in my own shower for the first time in 3 weeks!!! yipppppppeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!)
A Love for all Time
United in a moment of first sight
by a love that was eternally meant to be
Seperation, the years divided
melt
With a marriage vow to last
to the end of mortal time...
and perhaps beyond?

Marriage IS 'ELL
When we met I could tell
from the moment I fell
married life would be swell
though I didn't know you well
So I jumped in pell-mell
at the church in the dell
And they rang every bell
Then we moved to a cell
with no need to yell
But the stories you tell
now I know them too well
You hate when I yell
From tears, my eyes swell
I curse how I fell
and the ringing of bells
and this dingy old cell
So I'll ramble pell-mell
'til I'm buried in the dell

Elessar and Evenstar
One Midsummer Day
In dignity and grace the Fair folk arrived.
Clad in grey mantles with white gems in their hair.
The Sceptre of Annúminas Elrond did bear
Won fairly, and for one so fair.
For only to a King would Elrond agree
And allow her to deny immortality
The plan of the Valar
Was to be fulfilled.
Reborn again
The line of Eärendil.
Oh Mortal King and Elven Maid
In this hard won union
Is a legend made.
With stars on her brow and a sweet fragrance about her
Arwen Undómiel walked beside her father.
Elrond laid the hand of his daughter,
The Evenstar, in the hand of King Elessar.
All the stars glittered and danced in the sky
For destiny was fulfilled this day.

Good going, gang! And pencils down, please -- the June 2003 contest is officially closed. Glad to see that some of you enterprising kids took advantage of the extra time. As always, the more entries, the merrier.
Now, of course, we all have the definite pleasure of pondering, and choosing, and VOTING! The voting part is simple -- just send me an email. Get the address by clicking on my underlined name at the top of this post. Indicate your choices for first, second, and third place.
And this month, you have extra time to decide, because we're going to have an extended voting period. Votes will be due by Sunday night at midnight on July 13 (an hour past eleven p.m. on that day). I'll tabulate votes and post the results shortly thereafter. I'm very sorry to keep the winners in suspense for so long, but I'm heading out on Friday into the mountains for vacation, and won't be near a computer until the 13th. So, as recompense, the winners will receive extended bragging rights, and can display their prize ribbons through August 10. If that doesn't sit well with anyone, or if you have a question or comment, please email me. (Better make it fast!)
Kudos to our poets for their fine work this time. Month after month, TR poets truly stretch their creative wings in this contest. Seeing that and seeing new names among the entrants are two of the things that please me most -- so, many thanks to everyone who has helped to make this event successful and fun, and welcoming to all.
Have fun while I'm offline -- and don't forget to VOTE!
Olórië
