Well, with one thing and another, time is short for this month's contest. So the answer must be to write short poems! Let's do limericks -- they're flexible, fairly easy, and a whole lot of fun; perfect for summer. As for a topic -- I don't know what it's like where you are, but here, it's hot as, well, dragon breath. So that's it, then, our short-fuse-summer-vacation-July firecracker poetry contest is:
Dragon Limericks
The usual poetic license applies. You may enter more than one limerick, but please enter them SEPARATELY. Use your creativity and share your vision -- or your sense of humor!
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on July 31. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The limericks will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
There are length guidelines for limericks -- form guidelines, too. More on this posted below.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: If you plan to participate in this contest, you may wish not to read the rest of this thread before you submit your own limerick. It might affect your ability to remain "original." Then again, you may. There's a certain element of 'oneupsmanship' possible in limerick writing, and seeing other's work may spur you on. You choose! But please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the limericks until after the closing date. You can, of course, pick a fight privately in email or chat.
Get ready...have fun...and GO !!!
Info on limericks from flyingarts.net/workshops/basics/:
Limericks are humorous verses.
A limerick is a five line poem with a rhyme pattern 'aabba.'
The rhyme should be catchy and flow together.
The third and fourth lines are shorter than the first, second, and fifth. In other words, if the beat for the first and second lines goes "da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM," the third and fourth lines would go "da-DUM da-DUM," then back to the extra beat for the fifth line.
example:
Ogden Nash:
A flea and a fly in a flue
Were imprisoned, so what could they do?
Said the fly, "let us flee!"
"Let us fly!" said the flea.
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

There once was a dragon named Mort,
Who's life was cut tragically short.
Ate an orc, began belching,
And though he tried squelching,
He blew himself up with a snort.

There once was a little green smoker
Who tried to catch DA and choke her
But our Megan stepped in, and flashing a grin,
Slit open his side with her poker.
(I know members who do not remeber or were not around for the great war with Karo, will be confused over the references, but I just could not resist a little "in-joke".
I will post a more generic limmerick later.
Fang

Some days Smaug slithered - on others he'd slink
He huffed and he puffed with breath that did stink
Near the old town of Dale
Flew this Dragon so fell
"Til Bard Shot him and down he did sink

Two dragons lay huddled together
Enjoying the fine summer weather
When one said: "My dove,
I think I'm in love
At least I feel light as a feather!"

Much to the dragon's chagrin
A hobbit-thief finally broke in
To safe-guard his gold
fancy stories he told
But his end was soon to begin

A dragon of old was out hunting
Captured a fair maiden quite cunning
She fed him sweet breads
And stroked his forehead
Now we hear there's a love story coming!

A dragon that was most ferocious
Went looking for someone to smoke with
He found a hobbit there
With pipeweed to spare
Now that dragon is VERY "precocious"!

There once was an old wizard called "Geezer"
Who's big feet smelled bad as could be sir
His best friend was a dragon
Smells get his tail waggin'
Which made them fast companions we concur!

A dragon's heart may be evil or pure
One can never really know for sure
Till you rescue the maiden
His good temper fading
Your fears a sharp sword will help cure

Glaurung was a mighty fine drake
Morgoth was proud of his snake
The worm said with an evil grin
As he wiped elvish blood off his chin
"That was a tasty Nargothrond steak"

This is a poem about a dragon (natch) from John Howe's website. Errol Goodbody of Flynn is either from the writings of Anne McCaffrey or Terry Pritchett I wish I knew just what book it is. If anyone knows please tell me (!)
Cutting and pasting of this image from John Howe's site is not possible. So if you want to see this amazing creature please copy and paste this addy: www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php
So without further ado here is:
The Ballad of Errol Goodbody of Flynn
Dragon Errol Goodbody of Flynn
Thought breathing of fire was a sin
So with determination
And great innovation
Flies now, being jet power'd, with a grin.

Oops! I just tested the link, it gets you to Mr Howe's Portfolio very nicely but you'll have to check out the list of images. Go to Myth and Magic; a Diversity of Dragons, and Errol is in the last couple of images. Just click on the pics you want to see more of.

Siggy,
Wasn't Errol the adorable little dragon in Terry Pratchett's "Guards, Guards!"?
*smiles, fondly remembering the cute little thing*

Here lies Smaug, under the lake
Too late he realized his fatal mistake.
For Bard of Lake-town
Earned his renown
And smote the nasty fire-drake.
