I've been listening to the RotK soundtrack over the past few days. Those of you who have it know that the last track is sung by Annie Lennox. It's a mighty and beautiful song, and its title is the inspiration for this month's poetry contest topic:
Into the West
You don't need to have heard the song to write about this topic, I hope. In those three words is embodied many endings and beginnings, several heroic journeys, Middle-earth spirituality, deeply conflicted emotions, and much more. Choose whichever aspect is most meaningful to you.
The usual poetic license applies. No length or form guidelines this time, but as usual, no epics, please.
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on New Year's Eve. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The entries will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: Please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the poems until after the closing date. You can, of course, send praise privately in email or chat.
Get ready...have fun...and GO !!!

DREAMS OF THE WEST
My sleep is restless when I hear the gulls cry
From the startled nightmare of a Lidless Eye
I rise and see with an Elvish eye
This Doom of Men, and time gone by
My father Thranduil said it would be so
That ages of Elves may come and go
But fated men are doomed to stay
In a Middle-earth to win the day
My kin is leaving, and I must go
to an older realm that I do not know
But my heart is here, in Las-galen forest
With kin in Lothlorien, and in Rivendell's torrets
Oh stay the beating of my heart!
Middle-earth shores I do not wish to part
But the Rings have faded, so this may be best
That we will diminish and go to the west
For how can we recall the glory of past
When magic and hope is lost at the last
And all that remains of the world we once knew
Is a nine-fingered Hobbit and some poor Coney stew
At the Grey Havens I board the great ship
I think of the Hobbits, Merry and Pip
And Sam the Hero and Frodo the wise
And soon when tears should flood the eyes
The Gulls Cry
For I am Elven and I cannot cry
I just fade and diminish......
FAREWELL MIDDLE-EARTH
LEGOLAS WILL MISS YOU

this comes from a deeply personal fear of death...
or actually the fear of not being me anymore when i die...
The Leave Taking
Out there lies beauty of all the ages
Out there lies the lives of those
Who dwelled with me here in various ways
But now have chosen their final repose.
Out there lies peace, quiet contemplation
Out there lies faith still unexplained to me
Their thoughts in prayers my ears do not hear
My heart pounds out a refrain to flee.
"I am not ready!" my shout rings to the sky
"I have not done all i was meaning to do..."
Then Majah closes the book she loves most,
And sails Into The West too.
