I hope everyone here is doing well! I'm shadowofilluin, and I recently decided to get back into the legendarium after years of neglect. Like many others who discovered Tolkien's works, The Fellowship of the Ring film was my first experience with Arda. My dad encouraged me to try reading through the books, and by the time The Two Towers came out, I had finished the entire trilogy. Wanting more, I dug into the Hobbit, then still not satisfied, dove into the Silmarillion, and it all blossomed from there. My collection of these books were among my most cherished possessions growing up, and though my tastes have changed since I was a teenager, I will always have a place in my heart for the legendarium. Beyond simply enjoying the narrative and prose, I credit Tolkien for fueling my passion for worldbuilding in fiction, and the joy I find in this pursuit even when I don't plan on writing any of it down.
One area about the world of Tolkien I've been interested in exploring is the different in-world perspective of the events. Sam was one of my favorite characters in this regard, since he was a relatable everyman, but I'm curious about different cultures and places. How did the Easterlings view the War of Ring, or what did the average citizen of Minas Tirith think of Aragorn ascending to the throne? Hopefully here would be a good place to have these discussions!
I look forward to meeting you all!

Hello shadowofilluin:
Welcome to Tolkien's Ring! I started reading The Lord Of The Rings in 1969. Then I read The Hobbit. I read the whole set every 2-3 years until Peter Jackson's movies came out and then discovered the Barnes & Nobel study group from which we all came from. We started Tolkien's Ring to continue our discussions because we so enjoyed knowing there was more of us who loved Tolkien's works.
Our group also had several studies based on each of the books. When we had The Silmarillion, I began reading that which I hadn't done yet. Since then, I've worked on collecting all of JRRT's and Christopher's books for the whole set! I mostly use them as references for our discussions, and still have to read thru them all in full.
If you would like to start any discussions about the topics you are interested in, please start a new thread or add to an older one on any of our forums. You may even find some interesting discussions on each of our book studies or other forum for Characters, Places, Things, etc. that may already answer your questions! Also please feel free to add to any discussion already posted. We would all love to hear your thoughts.
And an new area you might be interested in is the Lord of the Rings online game which puts you right into Middle Earth and you can help save Middle Earth as a hobbit, elf, dwarf, or human! (or several). But a word of warning: It is very addictive and time consuming, but tons of fun! There is a forum just for discussion of the game. It is under Expressions of Arda and called LOTRO!

Welcome! The part of your post about wondering about the lives of other characters reminded me of Sam's encounter with the dead Southron in the "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbits" chapter of The Two Towers. In that paragraph, Sam wonders about the man's life and if he was a willing participant in this war. There are many sites with fanfiction, including this one. Have you read any?
Please, start or comment on any discussion you find here. We welcome new blood!

Shadowofilluin, greetings! That would be a great topic! Was remembering the LOTR introduction, and the attitude of the hobbits towards the now, long vanished Kings of Arnor -- contrasted with the Bree-folk attitudes towards the Rangers. Hope to see you online soon!

It's been some time since I've read or written any fanfics, but they were always a favorite vehicle for exploring these other perspectives (with the occasional "what-if" thrown in). I'll have to check that part out! Thank you all for the warm welcome! I don't have much spare time these days, but I'll be sure to contribute when I'm able.
