I just started reading Roverandom. It is really cute. I wish I had known how cute it was so I could have taken it with on vacation with Carli. We could have taken turns reading it.
Also she likes me to tell her stories so I could have started reading it in the truck while we drove to Kentucky. Then later, she could take a turn at reading it out loud. She is going into 3rd grade this Fall and has be one a pretty good reader.

Rover was brought by mail carrier bird to the moon where he got his wings and was renamed Roverandom because the Man in the Moon's dog was already named Rover. The moon sure has a lot of plants and flowers! And the flowers make music. LOL

It's very cute. I just finished it. Psamathos Psamathides of the Psamathists and Artaxerxes Pam. Gotta love Tolkien's names.
The moon trip and sea trips were fun. The moon has creatures and flowers and music. The sea reminded me of SpongeBob SquarePants.

If I remember correctly, there were illustrations that Tolkien made for this story, but I can't recall if they were published along with my text -- maybe just saw them in a book that had a whole slew of Tolkien's pics... In this case, Tolkien used "borrowed" names from ancient Near Eastern nations: Psamathos (usually Psammetichus or Psamtik} was an Egyptian pharaoh/ wizard of the 26th dynasty (664-610 BC); and Artaxerxes is a name used by the Classical Persians for two of their Great Kings. These names were commonly used in British Vaudeville acts featuring magicians, tying in with the mystique of the Orient. Tolkien probably saw many such stage presentations before WW I. Lost Empires by JB Priestly was made into a BBC mini series and depicts this era quite well. www.imdb.com/title/tt0090476/Now where did I put my copy of Roverandom?

Yes, there are JRRT drawings in my copy.
A hilly field with what looks like a farm, people, pigs, dogs, chickens? In color called House Where Rover Began His Adventure as a Toy
B&W tall thin tower on the moon. rRover arrives on the Moon
B&W A mountain with a dragon chasing 2 flying dogs The White Dragon Pursues Roverandom & the Moondog
Semi B&W & Color. mountains on the moon, sun rising, looking toward Earth Lunar Landscape
Color. Under the sea with fish, whale, octopus sea flora. The Gardens of the Merking's Palace
I thought Psamathos seemed Egyptian. That was my first thought when I saw it. And Artaxerxes also sounded like an ancient name of some sort. Thanks for the old movie clip and description.

Finally found it! My version has two colored plates in the middle, the House and Field scene, and then the Underwater scene. Between these two I have the other three sketches you mention, Stormy. The cover art features a blown-up section of the Underwater scene. Yes, it is a novella in size, I sort of remembered it as being much shorter. Starting my re-read now, kind of fun because I remember so very little of it -- almost a new read!

My cover has the same cover as yours. Mine is paperback. Oh, great that you don't remember much of it! It will probably start to come back to you as you get going with it. It was fun to read d it seems simple enough that Carli could read it. (Other than some longer more adult words and, of course, the wizard names!)
