Was able to acquire a really rare and somewhat unique calendar for my collection. How many of you remember the very popular poster done in 1977 by J. Cauty? It was a drawing of Gandalf with Frodo and Sam sitting at his feet, and along the borders were orcs, and Gimli and Gollum, etc. It has been printed ever since (and still sold by the Swiss company that bought the rights to it.) You can see the original (and learn its fate which is quite interesting) here: www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159372603In any case, one unusual version of the poster included a 1994 calendar. I was fortunate to find another collector who was selling various bits of his collection and was willing to part with this dainty! I'd call it "My Christmas Present" but that's a bit too reminiscent of Gollum's "My Birthday Present." Will create an entry and post a picture of it on my website when I receive it. And should be getting a couple more 2009 calendars: one from the Italian TS, another from DeviantArt. The latter is a calendar filled with photos from the New Zealand locales that hosted the LotR movies. And if you wish to give a Christmas gift that keeps giving all year long, consider ordering a 2009 Heren Istarion calendar for the Tolkien fan on your list. Nancy Martsch reviewed it (she ordered a copy) in the December Beyond Bree newsletter and was complimentary of our effort this year. If you need a reference, I'll refer you to Hob who ordered one. Cauty's drawing is very interesting. I like it a lot and I have never seen it before. The characters are so rugged. Sam really looks rugged and gnarly which is more how I pictured him while reading the books than he is depicted in the movie.
I like the slight touches of crayon to the pencil and ink sketching--very subtle touch.
Nice selling price, too!

Hulloo Stormrider -
I have seen that poster "around" for years. In fact, a coworker came in this summer with a framed copy of it. An uncle had given it to him. He was really happy to have acquired it. I can't wait to show him the calendar version! And, yes, the selling price of the original was quite "nice." I suppose the iconic status of the illustration justified it in someone's eyes (and pocketbook!)
Hope this finds you well. Merry Christmas!

A short note to inform those interested of three calendars that I just received and entered on my website. Two (A3 and A4 size) are the annual offerings from Colin Williams. The third is also from Mr. Williams. But it is his first attempt at both full-color illustrations and subjects from LotR. Previously, all illustrations were pen and ink and depicted scenes from "The Hobbit." Colin was generous enough to allow me to feature illustrations from his previous calendars in the 2009 HI/NETS calendar. www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendarsHappy New Year to all! 300! It has been a while since I posted. Hope everyone is enjoying (OK, tolerating) the winter. With the addition of the 2009 Elendilion and Parmadili issues to my collection, I have now been able to catalog 300 Tolkien calendars. Thank you to everyone who has helped me discover and collect these. Your support is very much appreciated. Hullo, Parmastahir!
300!!! Whoopee, that is cause for celebration -- CONGRATULATIONS!
Weird weather here, a few days of 80 F followed by sudden cold snap, 27 F and 1.5 inches of slushy-snow, now back into the low 60s. Meanwhile the northern folks are having blizzard after blizzard... Ah, Arizona, pain in the Summer, lovely Winters!

I have not posted in a while. But I have been busy! After talking about it for the longest time (almost a year and a half), I pushed my son to help me create my new website: www.tolkiencalendars.comHe designed it when he was in college (fall of 2007.) I had registered the domain name before then. I found someone to host for it me, and got my son to map it to that server. He set up some templates, and I have been spending most of my free time over the last month transferring all of the content from the Angelfire site. I think it is now all there . . . and I have added some content. I am now creating pages with the monthly illustrations. I am using the photos that I shot for the many Calendar of the Month features. I have programmed four so far: 1969 Ken Rudolph 1986 Hobbit Presse 2002 Pocket 2003 Ronnie Sellers (postcard) I have 23 more that I will create soon. You can access the monthly illustrations by clicking on the year/publisher (which is a green, underlined link for those entries.) Once I get all of those programmed, I will start creating new Calendar of the Month features. Those now appear on the homepage of the website. In this manner, I will someday get most (if not all) of the calendar illustrations documented. The only thing I need him to add is a visit counter. Then I’ll abandon the Angelfire site. Actually, I think I’ll program a simple link that will take visitors to the new site. Comments welcome! Away from The Green Hill Country, Parmastahir

Parmastihir:
I love your new website. It is very user friendly and is quick to load when clicking on the links. I like the calendar of the month embedded on the Home page with each month as a link below it. Very nice feature. You have it organized very nicely, too. And I like the color selection.
Congratulations on having your own website. You have stepped up, my friend!

Hulloo Stormrider -
I will pass your comments on to my son. It was he who designed it. I, too, appreciate all of the very same things that you noted: how quickly it loads, the layout, the colors (very Hobbitish), etc. And I LOVE the fact that I now have enough space to create calendar pages with the 12 monthly illustrations. I have programmed four of them; have 23 to go (using the photos from the many past CotM features.) Then it's on to new ones. Thanks for looking in! If you find any broken or incorrect links, please let me know. They are easy enough to fix now.

I did notice one picture link was a red X but I didn't make a note of it. When I get a chance I will see if I can find it if you haven't beaten me to it. It is nice to be able to control your own website. I love doing my own www.oliveleafsoap.com handcrafted soap website and being able to upload changes whenever I want to or need to. The equestrian drill team site are pages created by me, but I have to send the files to the team manager's nephew to load them. Luckily he is very tolerant of me and the tons of files and jpgs I send his way! www.midwestrenegades.com

Hi Stormrider -
There are a few calendars which I do not have photos of. Those will have a blank with a red x. I know how to fix that and will do so soon. But there is still so much to do and add!
I have not been on a horse more than 10 times in my life. So I admire the skill that you and MW Renegades have on them. Congratulations on the title!!! I can only imagine the amount of drill time it must have taken, and the managerial skills to get everyone to practice at the same time!

With three teams (and some riders on several teams) it does take planning to get everyone to practice each week. Each team practices on a different night and those on several teams really are dedicated riders. We have backup riders who can fill in if someone can't make it for some reason. We are a pretty dedicated team and we all usually make our practices because if we are missing a rider it throws off the whole pattern and spacing. We can always leave a space for the missing rider, but that still can cause some problems.
You should see my daugher's (DesiBaggins) team, the Dare Devils! They have stunt riding added to their drill pattern. Now they are the really daring riders and have more skill than me! They are performing at the Midwest Horse Fair this weekend in Madison WI.
Well, I guess that is enough plug for the Drill Team...this IS the calendar thread afterall! and to think it got started talking about your new website! lol!

Hello to all - It had been a while (OK, a long while.) But I have reinstituted the Calendar of the Month feature on my new website: www.tolkiencalendars.comThe CotM for May is the 2009 Middle-earth New Zealand calendar. My intent is to post these for a month, then create a permanent page upon which to display them. The monthly illustrations from almost all of the previous CotM features can now be found throughout the many entries. Hope you enjoy this one. Away from The Green Hill Country, Parmastahir
