Hey, Magpie: I really like your Art piece! That must be how the skies looked during the Battle Under the Stars, but w/o the 'sky writing'. I don't do people as well as horses so if there is ever a contest about horses I'll sure try to enter if I can figure out how to get my art on to the computer! What are you studying in college Magpie? I entered college when I was 40 years old. I loved school-started out to be a Geologist, but ran into a little problem called Math. To be a Geologist you need the Caculus however, I could not get past Intermediate Algebra. Change of major & 6 years after beginning a BA Ed. in History/Government/Political Science & Earth Science. While in college I became involved in student government rapidly discovering that my younger classmates had a much different agenda than yours truly & the rest of the 'old fogeys' in the student body. I turn 64 this year & have my Gold Card which allows me to audit any class (w/enough room) at our Community College FREE! Now if I can only find the free time! I want to take more art classes first. I took a lot of Art in both high school & college. Hi Vanya, I moved this out of the Art Contest thread since it was off topic there. Thanks for the compliment. I have to remind myself that I got good at the things I got good at by playing with them a lot. I am going for an AAS in Graphic Design. For the last 20 years I have been walking in a child's world. I was a stay at home mom for 13 years, volunteering in classrooms as a tutor and craft director during that time. Then I went to work in an inner city elementary school working in the reading program. For a number of years I read picture books out loud to children, supplying them with something many of us take for granted but isn't present in their lives. I created my own units, lesson plans and activities. Then I moved to kindergarten and began working in the phonemic awareness program. This is system that teaches what you need before you can read. Again, stuff that happens pretty naturally in some homes but not at all in other homes. I created many activities involving pictures, words, letters, sounds and hand signs. But, following the whims of the government, funding for education is being cut way back. I was laid off and, as hard as it was... and it was hard, I turned my back on the world of education and followed my other love: graphic design. All those activities, all the newsletters, all the lesson plans I typed up... they required an eye for graphic design and I decided to learn more about it. 4 days after my 52 birthday I started school. I think I'm going to like it. I think I might be good enough at it to find a job. I might even look back to the children's book industry, or the curriculum industry. Who knows. Most of my classmates (and my classes are small, under 10 most of the time) are around twenty and male. I enjoy their energy. They are kind to treat me a classmate worthy of their attention. I think sometimes, I'm the mom they wish they had... you know, the one that can be fun and supportive but never tells you to get up and do the dishes. We get stuck into ruts within our own families and we can practice behavior with substitute familial figures. They seem to enjoy my attention when I am excited about their work and their plans. If I could take classes for free I would be in mythology and Old English in a second. Hmmm... sounds like a good topic: If you could take any class (of any kind... academic, fine arts, crafts, sports, etc) without need to consider timing, babysitting, money or location... what would it be?

Magpie: Thank you for that very thought provoking question & the answer would have to be that I would take a computer graphics course so that I could combine my art w/the computer. I think so often how much I have been able to do & to learn w/my computer & now I would wish to add graphics projects to my still limited repertoire w/the computer. After I graduated from High School I went to Commercial Art School for a year. But found that I did not wish to be commercial artist. I've always loved drawing--drew horses all over my school papers to my teachers consternation, we drew the figure every day in art school (took turns modeling). In college took a 'Life Drawing' class w/ a nude model. I also love to design lettering & do Calligraphy. However, the idea of having someone else tell me what to draw just put me off-since that would be the reality of being a commercial artist: so I said Sayonara to art school went to business school. The need to be able to earn a living drove me to that but art would remain as a hobby & stayed 'pure'. That was my 19 year old view of it anyway. No regrets on that descision either! P.S.: Desi & Stormrider will appreciate this; my favorite job ever was a summer as a horse wrangler at kid's dude ranch camp--I got paid to ride horses! The pay was cowboy wages (40 bucks a month +room & board). But I LOVED it! Vanye

Vanye:
That would have been so much fun to work as a wrangler! I would like to try the "City Slicker" cow wrangler type vacation some time with my own horse! Or better yet own a small cattle ranch and work it for real with the rest of the family.
Have you ever thought about entering any of the TR art contests, Vanye? It is just for fun and we try to have a wide variety of topics to pick and choose from. I've really liked doing the Valar topic. I never thought I was very good at doing the human body, but I am getting better the more I practice. And there should be plenty of "horse" subjects in LOTR to enter something like that!

Horses are very hard to draw, I think!

When i worked at that camp i had my own horse w/me & kids who were good riders rode her some of the time. We rode 9 hrs a day taking the kids on trail rides. We had to groom & saddle them (the horses), also doctor them & get up out of bed at 2AM to chase them when they got out (which happened once). We slept in the bunkhouse w/the campers! Magpie was talking about how doing something a lot helps you to get better at it & that's pretty much how i learned to draw horses. So now i'll have to apply the same principle to learning how to do more stufff on the computer. Like getting my art work onto it! Vanye P.S. i don't know why that big section is in italics, guesss i did something w/o knowing i'd done it and cannot figure out how to change it! This is Stormrider playing around with your post! I did not see any bracketed i's in the edit mode! But I wonder if it has something to do with the "w / me &" that you typed in so I am going to change that and see what happens below: When i worked at that camp i had my own horse with me & kids who were good riders rode her some of the time. We slept in the bunkhouse w/the campers! Well! That seemed to work....I changed "w / me &" to "with me &" and it did not italicize! w / me must be some kind of italicizing code! lol!

Vanye:
Lesson one for editing your posts and using the tool bar!
On YOUR post with the italics, you will see in the upper right corner some options. Click on the "Modify" option. Then you will be in the edit mode.
You must have hit the I on the toolbar and then typed the portion of your post between the bracketed i's that pop up!
To make the text bold, italics, or underlined, click on the B, I, or U buttons on the tool bar. You will see a "b", "i", or "u" in brackets then the word TEXT and then the end bracketed letters with a / in front of each letter (b, i, or u). Highlight the word TEXT, delete it or type over it with what you want bolded, italicizied, or underlined.
Here is what the code will look like when you are editing and a sample of something I typed to become bolded, italicized, or underlined:
TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want bolded TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want italicized TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want underlined
Here is the exact same thing above the way it will appear to all the readers after your post it: TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want bolded TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want italicized TEXT the word "TEXT" is deleted and replaced with what I want underlined
The above "Code" in the box above can be seen because I used another tool in the toolbar. It is the Pound sign # and when you use it, code and /code will be in the brackets instead of the b, i, or u.
You don't have to use the toolbar buttons either. You can just type the b, i, or u in the brackets as shown in the code box above, then your text, and then type the brackets with /b, /i, or /u after your text.
I hope this helps!

Thank you Stormrider: I copied it & am experimenting w/it in this post. I tried this once before, but it did not go well. uThis is supposed to be underlined.u We shall see! Try again. OK maybe i 'm gettin' the hang of this now. ;D Well i got that quote posted , BUT i had to type the whole thing. Isn't there something you can do w/the 'cut & paste' features to insert the whole quote w/o having to type it. Or am i just lazy? Anyway Thanx for the help, if anyone needs help it's me, for sure!! Isn't there something you can do w/the 'cut & paste' features to insert the whole quote w/o having to type it. Or am i just lazy? VanyeVanye, when I wanted to quote you, the easy way to do it was to hit the quote button on the upper right corner of your post (that I wish to quote). That insert your whole post into the proper quote commands, as well as keep all the formatting commands you put into your post (italics, bold, etc.) I could leave your whole post in, but I'm replying to a specific part, and I want it to be clear what I'm replying to, so now I will go up and delete the parts that don't deal with my reply. I have to be careful not to erase too much: I can't erase any of the initial quote command. (It has a bunch of numbers in it and stuff). I can't accidently erase any brackets for commands I want to keep. (These thingies ] [ ) (This next part is fine tuning a little. If you're getting overwhelmed, you can skip it for now, but it's not that hard once you realize how the whole system works.)If I have an 'open' command like a 'b' for bold inside the brackets - I must have a 'close' command like a /b inside the brackets. So if you've written a paragraph in italics, and I only want the last sentence, I can delete the first three sentences... but I cannot delete the open italics command at the beginning of the paragraph (the 'i' within brackets) if I want to keep the italics for that last sentence. But I could delete the open italics command if I go in and delete the close italics command (the /i within brackets). Then the italics are removed completely. This system of commands that uses brackets ] [ is called bulletin board code. There's another code that uses carats > < called html. Most forums use bulletin board code so if you're hand writing the code, it will look same from one board to the next (mostly). But the way the little buttons on top of your reply window work can be radically different from one forum to the next. So another forum you visit might work a little differently, but they all usually have help areas that will get you started. I will say, that of the forums I've visited, this forum (for proboards) is pretty frustrating. Usually, I can type info, -- decide I want to italicize it -- highlight the text I've just typed -- and then hit the button for italics. I can't do that here (at least not in Firefox... but I don't think I could in IE, either). If I do that, all the text I've just typed will be erased and the command for italics will appear with the word TEXT written between them. And... the stuff that's just disappeared is not recoverable. It's gone for good and I must start again. If, I insert the cursor next to the text I've just typed and hit italics, it will insert the command for italics at the end of my post... not where the cursor is. So now I must go down and retreive it from the bottom of my post (cut) and go back up and find my original text - paste the command next to the original text, cut the original text - go in and erase the word TEXT and paste my typed text into it's place. That's way too much work and I will usually just hand type the codes myself. I originally learned some rudimentary HTML code while at Barnes and Noble University, since we had to hand code everything to make our posts have italics and bold, etc. Once you learn that, the system starts to make sense and the bulletin board code isn't that hard to figure out. I can hand code but I don't have the heart of a coder and I'd rather have buttons that do the job properly for me.

Thanx Magpie: ;D Hey it worked!! I gotta keep practicing so i don't forget what I did! I gotta tell you that on my computer the quote button is in the lower left hand corner. So what i 'm wondering if the board is configured differently on different providers..I'm on Charter High-speed. Just wondering. Thanx again, Vanye Well, if I'm reading a post within the thread it was written, the button for me is in the upper right hand corner. If I'm reading the post on the page "10 most recent quotes" the button is on the bottom left. (I hadn't noticed this before you said something.) I will check recent posts on the "10 most recent quotes" page, but then click on the link that takes me to the thread. There's no reason I have to do that, however. I don't think different providers change how pages look but different browsers will. A page can look different in Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Firefox (three common browsers). Before you know it, you'll be helping other newbies to the net, Vanye. These skills just build on themselves. I used to have write everything down in notebooks but now I just seem to figure things out as I go and don't have too many problems. I love my computer!
