I was rather surprised at Stephen Fry cast for the mayor, too. I was thinking he was more comedic just like you, Freddie. But if an actor is good at acting, he should be able to change modes and do anything. I believe Fry is a good actor (what I have seen of him) so I think he can pull this off.
I am not familiar with Benedict Cumberbatch at all and I was wondering what his voice sounds like. It seems like people at TORN in the forums over there were pleased with his choice.
Luke Evans looks a bit too young to play Bard the Bowman. I pictured him as more dark and serious and in his 50's. But the makeup people can do wonders!

Fry is extremely talented and extremely intelligent. I have no doubt he will get the character and play him well.

The Hobbit Facebook page has posted some production photos. A few already appeared in Entertainment Weekly and showed us our first glimpse of Martin Freeman as Bilbo with some slightly blurry Dwarves in the background. But they also just posted a clear shot of Nori, Ori, and Dori which is pretty awesome! Link is below. You may have to click "Like" in order to see the content. www.facebook.com/thehobbitmovies?sk=wall

The profile of Martin Freeman as Bilbo does have a bit of an Ian Holmes Bilbo look to it although somewhat younger.
It is interesting seeing some of the Dwarves and Bilbo.

AWSOME! FREDDIE! Thanks for the links. Now I am going to look at the full group picture and see if I can tell who is who under all that make up.
Thorin certainly looks haughty, doesn't he? But I thought he was older and had silver hair. I'm looking up his description in The Hobbit now and all I can find for now is he had a sky blue hood with a long silver tassle.

Kili surprised me the most. Interesting direction. Since he is the youngest dwarf, they've gone the handsome beefcake route to appeal to the ladies in the audience. I guess when you cast someone like Aidan Turner, you're not going to cover him up with a beard and prosthetics. I'm okay with it, as I never found it realistic that the entire dwarf race would be old, wrinkly, and bearded. That's our classic image of them, yes, but there had to have been some youngsters and some variety in their appearance.
Thorin looks amazing. Not strictly accurate since they're skewing younger with him as well. But he has the haughty determination and presence of an ousted king seeking to reclaim his birthright. Fantastic armor too and his sword genuinely looks like it's from the same smithy as Sting.
Gloin has a strong resemblance to Gimli. Well done there.
Nori's star-shaped hairdo is an unusual design. Kinda like it though.
Ori seems to be a more studious-looking fella, perhaps the scholar or scribe of the group. I could see him becoming a favorite of mine.
Bifur has a chunk of axe embedded in his forehead! Badass!
Bombur is even bigger than I imagined!
Overall, they look fantastic. It looks like Jackson and his team are taking steps to make each dwarf a distinct character, rather than a mass of anonymous supporting players. That must have been a challenge. I don't have a lot of clear memories of the various dwarves' personalities, except for a few of them.

I wonder how young in comparision to the older dwarves Fili and Kili are. I can agree with you on the younger dwarves being less rough and bearded (as well as the women). I just thought that they would still look more rough or gnarly just because they are dwarves. Or more solid and tough like stone--weren't they created by Aule out of the stuff of Arda? They need to look more rugged at least. They look more elvish which disappoints me.
I'm not so sure that the star shape is Nori's hair. I think it is a cap or hood of some sort. But if it was hair, I wounder how it will "keep" during the rainy and windy scenes.
Well, Thorin does look ousted as you say Freddie. He definately looks like he wants his mountain back and intends to get it. You can see that haughtiness, too.
Yeah, Bombur is really bigger than I thought he would be but the book does say he is pretty big...what were JRRT's written words? oh yes, "For one thing Bombur was immensely fat and heavy." An Unexpected Party as the four dwarves including Thorin tumble into the doorway with Gandalf right behind them.

I just noticed on the cast page at TORN www.theonering.net/torwp/the-hobbit/cast/Evangeline Lily (Kate from the tv show Lost) is now cast as Tauriel. This must be a made up character because I cannot find this character in the list of names at the end of ROTK nor in Robert Foster's A to Z Guide to Middle Earth. I don't see Liv Tyler in the cast either. I guess we won't be seeing Arwen at all. I suppose she was in Lothlorien during the time Bilbo and the Dwarves came through Rivendell.

Yes, Tauriel is an original character. From what I've heard, she's an elf, though I can't recall if she's from Rivendell or Mirkwood. Jackson and his team want to remedy the lack of female characters in The Hobbit. The idea of new non-Tolkien material makes me nervous but at the same time, having no women in the cast wouldn't fly with today's audiences.
Jackson also added Saorise Ronan as an elf named Itaril. Don't know if that's still happening. She's on theonering.net cast list but not IMDB.

Saorise Ronan just announced that she is not going to do The Hobbit. She says it would take a whole year away from the other opportunities she has in Hollywood so she has made the decision to work on her USA acting opportunities instead of doing The Hobbit. I believe TORN has some things posted about her decision.
Tauriel is an original character? Hmmm...I guess I will have to go to the book and read the Elvish chapters to see if there are any names given!

I wonder if Evangeline Lily's friendship with Dominic Monaghan from the Lost TV show helped get her this role.
