Not sure if one of the fight scenes belongs to the Troll episode -- will be interesting to see if the movie "monsterizes" the Trolls, or sticks to the cockney-talking Bert, William, and Tom characters of the book. The, speechless, beastial Cave Troll of the LOTR movies will not work well for The Hobbit...
Alas, not a glimpse of Smaug... though we do get Gollum in the cave.
Think I'll snitch on Galadriel, Celeborn needs to know!

Well, I would definately be disappointed if PJ changes Bert's, William's, and Tom's original personalities! I bet he will keep them true.
We are never going to get a sneak peak of Smaug! I am sure PJ has his security police protecting him! Smaug's movie image won't show up until the movie with him in it is released--and probably his voice is under wraps, too.

I knew they had cast the actor who will voice Smaug...he is also going to be the Necromancer's voice. I don't even know who Benedict Cumberbatch is let alone know what his voice sounds like! I am sure he will change his voice to do both characters, too. IMDb www.imdb.com/name/nm1212722/ says he is also in War Horse and Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. Perhaps I should go see those movies to listen to him speak! He is also in a TV Series called Sherlock but I have never seen that one.

Well, he has an interesting face, too bad, as both the assigned characters he'll be rather heavily "made-up," lol... Wonder if You Tube might have a trailer of his other shows, featuring his "regular" voice at least? Richard Boone's deep/ gravelly voice was a great dragon choice. Not sure I want to hear a "voice" for Sauron, might lessen the sense of mystery and awe? Thanks fer da links! Here's an interview with Cumberbatch as Sherelock: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmAIOgdbICwHmm, sounds like a normal sort of voice, maybe they'll change it with sound effects?

I agree...pretty normal voice. I am sure they will be doing something to his voice to make it more slick, cunning, and dragony!
Martin Freeman is Watson to Cumberbatch's Holmes. I didn't know that!

On this video from Comic-Con, they have a sound clip of Benedict Cumberbatch reading Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" poem. He sounds awesome, very deep and melodious and dragon-y. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bay8NcZfS9c&src_vid=6vnFF2VAUbA&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_906143And here's a trailer for Sherlock since someone asked: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSQq_bC5kIwHe's really good on Sherlock so I think he'll do a great job as Smaug. I'm kind of confused on why he's also voicing the Necromancer though. I thought the voice of the Ring in the LOTR movies was meant to be Sauron. You know, the one that says "Build me an army worthy of Mordor" and whispers "Elessar" at Aragorn and so forth. I would have preferred they kept that actor. But then again, maybe he's disguised in another form as the Necromancer so he sounds different.

Thanks, Freddie:
Cumberbatch's voice is deep and melodious! and Smaug's voice should be rather mesmerizing so I am sure he will be able to pull it off.

The Comic Con video link also mentioned a Gandalf World Tour where you can sign up for a statue of Gandalf to come to you. You would take a picture of him doing something with you or in your neighborhood and then send him on to the next address. Not sure how it works but TORN is supposed to have some information on it. Contact: fandalf@theonering.net
I hope to find more info about this and sign up for it myself.

OMG! I'M ON THE LIST TO HAVE GANDALF VISIT ME!
I never thought I had a chance of being picked. OMG! OMG! OMG!
What should I serve? How should I act? What kind of entertainment should I have? I wonder how many feathers Gandalf likes in his feather bed? What kind of pipeweed is his favorite?
OMG! OMG! OMG!

Fantastic! Er, just how big is this Gandalf statue? I'm hoping this is not life-sized!
OK, just be cool, Gandalf asked Bilbo for some red wine, I believe, sweet mead will do in a pinch, and maybe some of those "gobblin' finger" cookie snacks? No lady-fingers, Galadriel might have to count her own...
Heavy, Full English Breakfast was ordered at Bilbo's, but never supplied, at least not by the sleep-in hobbit -- so a hearty farm style breakfast seems appropriate, no cram-cakes, splurge this once and get some genuine lembas!
Don't ask him anything about the Balrog, still a touchy subject, I hear; but do see if he knows whether or not Sam's cousin Hal really did see an Ent/ Entwife, up on the northern moors of the Shire! Maybe it was just an Elm tree afterall...
Leave him a couple of bars of your best Spring-Scented soap, and maybe he will have forgotten about his toothbrush, nary a mention of oral hygiene in LOTR! Maple syrup scented tobacco?
You can do this, Stormrider -- remember he's just a Maia, and you rank, here at least, as Illuvatar!

I never thought of that! Good point! That helps me calm down now! Thanks for all your other suggestions. Yes, Balrog would not be a good topic to discuss. And good idea to send him on his way with some Olive Leaf Soap! Good advertising for me. From the email I received and the picture examples that were attached, it looks like Gandalf is about 2 ft tall. However, we have to do some trick photography to make it appear that he is life sized in our picture and he has to be the main subject of the picture. This should be interesting! I am not exactly sure where he is right now. He left on his tour in September so he has been traveling around a while already. There are actually two Gandalf's...one in the USA and one in Europe. There is a TORN member in Chicago who has sent an email and will be communicating with us as the time gets closer. Here is the official Flicker website where pictures will be posted: www.flickr.com/photos/GandalfWorldTour/ You can see Fandalf (that's what they are calling him) in his carrying case and some of the cool places he has been already. He has gone to a lot of places I would love to go myself. He must be having a riot. Well, I have to go now and start planning on how to entertain him and make him comfortable. ------- Here is some info from the email I received from the Chicago TORN member: We kicked off the Tour on September 24 in Los Angeles at the Bilbo Baggins Birthday celebration. The picnic was a great success and Fandalf has started his tour. We have more than 400 participants in this event just in the US and Canada so you can imagine the logistics are staggering. We have collected your contact info and organized all the applicants based on their location. I'm attaching a list of all the participants with the city and state/province in which they live to help us move Gandalf around. You'll notice from the list that some of the names are highlighted in yellow. These are TORN staff members who are helping with the Tour, and they are stepping up to help with this very important project. Please keep this information confidential - Tolkien fans are the best in the world, and we want to respect your privacy! The cities are listed in order in which Fandalf will be visiting, so although we can’t predict when Fandalf will be in your area, you can see where your city falls in the order of visits. We will try our very best to get Fandalf to everyone, but we might have to skip a couple locations if the time gets short. The Tour ends next summer at Comic Con, so Fandalf must be in San Diego by July 11. We need your help to make this happen - please keep Fandalf moving along! As you can imagine, it's impossible to pin down specific dates when you will get Fandalf. What we will do is communicate, communicate, communicate and stay flexible to keep him going. In some cases, we might consolidate Fandalf's visit to a large city. For example, I live in Chicago, and there are several of us that live in the area. We might arrange a day or two to take Fandalf around together and share him amongst all of us. That way we maximize the number of participants.

I saw War Horse today and Cumberbatch had a role in the beginning as the captain in the cavalry. I paid close attention to his voice in all of his scenes. He has a pretty deep voice! I can see him doing Smaug's voice now. He just has to add some mezmerizing and sly tones and it should be easy for him.

So I've been thinking about it and I'm actually okay with the new character Tauriel being added to the movie. Based on interviews, it seems there will be no unnecessary romance with Legolas and no divergent sub-plots about the character. All the filmmakers are doing is giving a name and character to an already existing presence in the story -- the Wood-elves. Other than the Elvenking and Galion, none of the Wood-elves have names or developed personalities in the book. With this being the case, who's to say some of them weren't female?
In a medium like film, one has to make vague background characters more defined. Jackson did this in the LOTR films. We knew Boromir was killed by Orcs. In the film, this was shown more explicitly with the character of Lurtz the Uruk-hai captain. Faramir had important exposition to share with the audience so he was given a lieutenant named Madril to talk to.
I imagine that Tauriel will serve much the same role. The Wood-elves capture the Dwarves and fight in the Battle of Five Armies. Tauriel will likely be a focus character for telling this part of the story. If one wants to add a female presence to The Hobbit (and let's face it, a film with zero women would seem odd in 2012), this seems a reasonable way to do it.
Thoughts?
