In the chapter beginning, "Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum," we read the description of Gollum's lake and home. We learn that when the goblins were tunnelling through the cave, this is the point at which "they found they could go no further." What does this reveal about Bilbo's circumstances? Through these circumstances, what do we learn about Bilbo's character development at this point?

This reveals that Biblo is going to have to back track a little bit. This is where we learn that Bilbo is very smart. He does a fine job of using Gollum.

Well, the goblins couldn't go any further because Gollum was down there and would throttle them from behind and drag them off for dinner. The goblins were getting too spooked by what lurked down in the roots of the mountain so they didn't really want to continue and when they came upon the lake, that decided it for them--no more tunneling!
Bilbo found himself in complete darkness and couldn't see or hear anything. He was disoriented and from only feeling the walls and floor around him, he could not guess which direction he should attempt to take but crawled along none the less and came across a ring of cold metal on the floor and stuck it in his pocket.
At this point Bilbo gave himself up to pity for himself thinking of his comfortable hobbit hole and the nice meals he could be eating there. That just made him more miserable. Then he began to wonder how and why he had been left behind by the Dwarves and Gandalf!
Luckily he still had his little sword and it shown a very dim blue light so he knew that the goblins were far away from where he currently was. Finding the sword gave him direction. He couldn't go back, nor sideways, so he just began to move forward. He passed other side passages but was afraid they would lead him back toward goblins so he kept going straight ahead. When he ran into the water, he was worried about the slimy bug-eyed creatures that could be in it.
Bilbo was all alone and he was learning to depend on himself and whatever possessions he had to keep on going. Then he found he would also be using his mind and his wits as well.
