April 14 is here! Let's start discussing what we have read - Ainulindale and Valaquenta.
I have posted to discussion starters, and one insight. I encourage others to post their questions and thoughts. Questions can either be invitations to discussion or requests for information. First timers - if you are confused, don't be afraid to ask! Probably there are other people with the same question. And I'll be relying on all the knowledgeable people here to help find answers.
To keep things somewhat organized, it would help if each question or commment was its own discussion thread. When you are looking at the Silmarillion board, near the top, there is a little talk balloon icon that says "New discussion." Click on it to start a new thread. (Just think how good it will feel to see your name listed as the starter of a discussion thread which generates 20 comments!)
A reminder about spoilers: let's try hard not to give anything away. Comments and discussion should be based only on the portions of Sil which we have read together, as well as LOTR and Hobbit, when relevant. Outside information and insight, based on other literature or other disciplines of study are welcome and encouraged.
The temptation to discuss material ahead of our schedule will be strong. Sil is full of prophesies, foreshadowing, and outright statements of what is to come. But let's resist, for the sake of the first timers among us - we don't want to spoil their adventure. Remember that we are planning to read Sil again, after the first time through. On THAT journey we can have a field day with all the prophesies!
