I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying reading the Silmarillion. We have just started discussing the book and have not gotten very far into it, but I am pleasantly surprised that I am eagerly looking forward to reading more. I was also quite surprised that it was not has hard to decipher as I had originally thought. I had visions of being totally lost and not being able to understand any idea or word of what Tolkien wrote (drowning in a sea of words). I usually read at night, after it had gotten quiet and I don't know that may have made a difference, but I found it easier to read and quite interesting.
My first thought was that Melkor would turn out to be Sauron, and was quite excited to realize that we would be getting Sauron's beginnings this early on. I am sure that a lot of people don't realize how early his beginnings actually were. I must say, though, that I was even more surprised to discover that Sauron was not Melkor, but a Maiar who fell into the dark path with Melkor. (All evil must have their minions.)
Well, that is my two-cents, as it were. I hope that the rest of the first-timers are having as an enjoyable time reading The Silmarillion as I am.

Kristen, I think you comment about Melkor being Sauron was insightful, though not literally correct. In effect, by learning from his Master, Sauron became Melkor in all but name.

I agree.
It makes me wonder though....
Melkor then Sauron then who? one of the Ringwraiths?
That's just me, and my ideas.
A phrase comes to my mind "History ahs a habit of repeating it's self."

I believe Tolken says that the Ringwraiths expired when the Ring was destroyed. But I'm sure there was some evil entity to carry on afterwards.
namaste,

Tolkien started a sequel to LotR. there were going to be satanic like cults. He decided not too far into it that after the "War of the Ring" there was nothing BIG enough to hold interest. So, he dropped it

"...and a cry went up into the shuddering air, and faded to a shrill wailing, passing with the wind, a voice bodiless and thin that died, and was swallowed up, and was never heard again in that age of the world."
(shrugs) maybe I just read in between the lines too much, but I think that Tolkien deliberately left room for a sequel.

Lady O, you will find "The New Shadow" in Vol. 12 of the History of ME series called The People of Middle Earth. Though the book is well worth reading, don't buy it just for the few pages of the sequel. I suggest that you check your local library.
