I put some of the reading schedule on the Calendar. But, remember that this is when to have it read by. When Megn1 posts the questions to ponder, I'll put them in the comments portion of the appropriate date. All you will have to do is click on the link and the questions will pop up. That way, if you can't find it on the board, you'll be able to locate it easily on the calendar. ----DA

I modified the Silmarillion entries on the Calendar to include week #'s in case anyone gets confused about what week we are on or wants to reference anything. Does anyone need me to put Megn1 questions on the calendar? I didn't this past week. Did anybody miss it? If not, then it is less work for me.

As far as I'm concerned, the megn1 questions don't need to be on the calendar. I've been going directly to them on the message board.

DaleAnn...
Thank you for all that you've done in aiding to keep us organized and on track. For myself, I go directly to the message board for the questions. I see no reason to post them on the calendar.

I'm fairly new here, so apologies if this is out of line or already has been discussed to death. Has there been any thought to a slow read of The Silmarillion? The first few pages seem enough for a week's worth of discussion!

Diana, boy are you opening a can of worms, LOL. The reading schedule was a struggle. At first, I wanted about 75 pages a week. Megn1 wanted 20 pages. We compromised on around 40 pages.
The great thing about this message board is that it will stay here (not like B&N). Yes, there are plenty of things to discuss and we will continue to discuss anything and everything as long as there are even just two people left. Or in Karo6's case, just one person left. So, if you want to bring up a topic about a previous week's reading, go for it! Please!!!
And guess what? Right after we are done reading Sil, we are going to read it again (with a slightly different format and with other works included.) So, there is another opportunity for us to spend more time on it.
Does this help you at all? I sure hope so because I don't want to leave anybody behind. ------DA

Hi, Dale Ann, could you explain what the next reading will be and what books we will be using? Although I don't post much, I really enjoy these discussions. You guys know so much about these books and your messages really enhance my reading. BTW, this book is difficult enough that I am just barely keeping up with the reading.

For the record, I am enjoying the pace that we are reading... as DaleAnn says, it was a compromise. I do hope the first-timers can keep up. And I hope they don't get overwhelmed by the depth of some of the discussions - we have some deep thinkers in this group, and we all are learning!
Also, I see no need for my questions to go on the calendar. They are discussion starters, not lessons.

Yeah, that's true. Actually, my problem is the opposite. I get
*so* caught up in the details and am astounded (once again)
by Tolkien, I get too much into depth, keep re-reading things,
and before you know it, you guys are 5 chapters ahead of me!
It's just that the book is so great. I didn't expect much, but
Sil is *almost* as good as LotR!
But you will be reading Sil again? Maybe I'll lurk this time
around.
Diana

Karen, I had posted the next syllabus on the General board. I made a reply to it this morning so, that it is at the top of the discussion (in discussion only view). Go have a look. ----DA
