When we began this journey through the Silmarillion, I asked people to indicate their intent to read with us by signing in.
We are nearing the half-way point, and it's time to check in and see how everyone is doing. So once again, I'm asking everyone to respond to this thread and tell us how the reading is going for you. Are you able to keep up with the pace? Is Silmarillion what you expected it would be? What's your impression of the book, at this point?

I'm still here! I've had no problem keeping up with the reading, though it's not the first time for me. I'm following the discussions with great interest, and have learned a lot, especially about Elven genealogy. The questions brought up on the board require a lot of thought, and though I've been contemplating at length, I haven't been posting those thoughts. I'm sure I'll be more vocal on our next reading of The Sil...

I'm here too. I haven't had a problem keeping up, though this is not my first time reading the Silmarillion. There's lots of great discussion, and I've learned some things that I didn't catch earlier.

I wrote once and it isn't showing, so here goes...hope it doesn't end up to be a repeat.
I am just hanging on...partly into last week's reading, but refusing to quit! It is a slow read, and I've had several things happen at once in RL. I'm enjoying Sil, and yes, it is what I thought it would be. Megn, you are doing a fantabulous job!

The Sil is as difficult as I expected. I'm constantly looking up names of people and places, trying to keep relationships of elves and geographical sites sorted out in my mind. I'm hanging in there, but I really appreciate the chapters where there is a real story and not just descriptions of people and places.

I read the entire Silmarillion. As soon as we started this community (January), I started reading it and finished it just one week before we started the discussions. Usually it doesn't take me that long to finished a Tolkien book, but this one WAS much more difficult.
As we have been doing a few chapters at a time, I find I can scan thru them again and that helps me tremendously. I am reading everyone's posts and learning much. Great job everyone!
I am still trying to think of the thing that is dear to me (or precious).....I think I have it now but it will take me a little while to post it because I want to compose it in notepad first.

I am hanging in, too. I had started reading before I joined this group, so I am ahead on the reading, and am managing to keep up with the boards. I may struggle a little when the reading catches up with me, and I will make the effort to stay with everyone. I am really enjoying the discussion and the variety of topics and viewpoints.

"Real Life" and computer problems in April combined to put me very far behind in the reading, but I am not giving up. I am loving what I have read so far in Sil and I don't want to lose the enjoyment by stressing about keeping up so I probably will not be able to participate in discussions for awhile, but be assured I am still committed to finish the book. I will have several hours on the plane to Chicago in a couple of weeks that I will put to good use. If I'm able to sign on while I'm there I'll try to catch up on some of the discussion threads.

I am really enjoying reading the Silmarillion and the discussions. Megn you absolutely rule. Your quetsions are thought provoking and dare I say it interesting. You have a wonderful knack for extracting what I think about a situation but more importantly you ask questions which may me examine the way I feel about characters and situations. Mostly we never agree on anything but thats okay sooner or later we will find one thing we agree about although for the life of me I dont know what its gonna be. Anyways would like to show my appreciation for your hard work and time. Thank You

One of the best things to come out of this reading of Sil, is an entire community of well versed and knowledgable Tolkienites. To have so many of us, so empowered is a great thing, and as a community our knowledge brings us closer to being the site where Tolkien novices will seek to come.
I am proud of each and every one of you. Even the lurkers here who do not care to post, are absorbing a knowledge base that will increase our worth as a community when they finally find thier voice. So, READ ON! Fellow Tolkienites!
I have a vision that one day, when someone mentions Tolkien, they will be directed here, where the love and community fosters true understanding of the themes extant in Tolkien's work. The pity that stayed Bilbo and Frodo's hand, remains the integrity that binds us together. For ALL have a part to play here, whether we see it clearly now or not. Many that died deserved life, but WE cannot give it to them. What we CAN give is life to many that do not know it. For in Tolkien we find joys that pierce like cold steel.......good beyond hope!

Rivers,
THANKS! Your comments make it all worth while...
I am enjoying this read through Sil, and I am learning through all of the comments that are made. This group has helped me see things I never noticed before.
I've also finally got my hands on the audio version of Sil from my local library. Kudos to Glorfindle for recommending this resource! I'm amazed at the things I am discovering, as I listen to the tapes - things I somehow never noticed when I read the words. Also, I'm realizing that I have pronounced nearly every name wrong! That's what I get for studying Tolkien solo for so many years. (For that matter, on first reading I misprounounced Aragorn and Saruman, and have had to work hard to correct myself...)

I'm not doing so well. It's my own fault. I expected this to be,
if not a difficult book, one that will astound as LotR did. And it
*is* astounding! I get so caught up in details, I roll them over
and over in my mind. It's wonderful! But it makes for slow-going.
I should have read The Sil before signing up here.
Oh well. I'm enjoying the book *and* the company, and hope
to be more active next time around!
Diana
