First, an apology. I fell behind in keeping up on these boards, and then it became harder and harder to come back because I knew I would need a significant chunk of time to get caught up. So those who checked on Sunday for new questions and discussion threads will have noticed that there were none. Thank you, Algy, for starting us off. After our "vacation," we have reached chapters 21 and 22 of Quenta Silmarillion, covering Turin and the fall of Doriath. Turin is the single most depressing story I know. Makes Oedipus Rex look like a comedy. Do not read it when you are looking for a little light escapist reading. I'm not sure of its purpose in the overall story of Sil, except to show Morgoth's power over everything at this point in the history. And to make clear just how fallen Middle Earth is. And to show how humans have been caught up in the curse of the Noldor. I think you could read and understand the rest of the book without having to read this chapter. In fact, that's what I did when I read Sil to my daughter - I skipped Turin because I simply didn't want to have to read through that misery again. So you have my permission to skip it and be happy! The Fall of Doriath, while almost as depressing, is central to the over all story, and you must read it (Sorry). The Silmaril brings destruction in its wake...
