It is up to Sam to rescue Frodo from the Orcs. Fighting fear (of the Orcs and what they might do to Frodo) and exhaustion, he realizes that time is precious. He must reach Frodo before he can be removed from the Tower and brought before Sauron. Sam is forced to use the Ring to hide from the Orcs and finds that his sense of hearing is more acute and relies on this enhancement to discover Frodo's whereabouts.
However, Sam discovers silence as he enters the Tower and dead bodies of Orcs strewn about. He realizes the Orcs were probably fighting over the mithril coat and fears for Frodo's safety. Despite his terror, Sam realizes that the Orcs' fighting and murdering of each other has helped him out; but now he is even more concerned about Frodo!
Looking about, he sees no sign of Frodo and he has gone all the way to the top of the tower! Feeling defeated, he sits down and softly and forlornly begins to sing old songs from his childhood. New strength comes to him as he sings but a snarling Orc voice shouts. 'Ho la! You up there, you dunghill rat! Stop your squeaking, or I'll come and deal with you. D'you hear?'
Sam peaks out from his hiding place and watches as the returning Snaga puts up a ladder to a trap-door in the roof. Anger sparks when Snaga cracks a whip and Sam realizes it is Frodo that Snaga is speaking to. Sam charges up the ladder and attacks causing Snaga to fall through the trap door.
Sam comforts Frodo who is terrified because he believes that the Orcs have taken EVERYTHING that he had, including the Ring! At first he is relieved that Sam has it, but quickly demands it back and will not allow Sam to share the burden with him.
Dressing in Orc attire, they leave the tower, sneak past the Watchers using the Phial of Galadriel, alert one of the Winged Nazgûl, and make a mad dash to escape into the Land of Mordor!
