The people who remain in Minas Tirith are plagued with dread and doubt as they wait for news to reach them on the outcome of the war against the Dark Lord. Meeting Éowyn for the first time, her loveliness, hurt, sorrow, and unrest touch Faramir. She sees him as a tall man both stern and gentle and his soothing words of wisdom and concern soften her. Together Faramir and Éowyn face the uncertainty of events and while doing so begin to reach out to each other. They learn from each other, help each other heal from their wounds, and comfort each other.
An eagle brings news to the City that the War is over and that Sauron's Realm has ended. The City is made ready for the return of the Captains of the West and their host. Faramir, the Steward, and Húrin, the Warden of the Keys, and all the people dressed in their best raiment and flowers gather at the Gates to greet the hosts of Gondor and Rohan when they arrive.
Faramir approaches Aragorn and returns the white rod of the stewards to him, but Aragorn returns it saying "That office is not ended, and it shall be thine and thy heirs'." Faramir turns to the people and introduces Aragorn as "one who has come to claim the kingship again at last." The people cheer.
Guards step forward with the crown of Eärnur the last king and Faramir held up the crown and presented it to Aragorn. Aragorn makes an oath that he and his heirs will abide in Gondor until the end of the world but he hands the crown back to Faramir. Aragorn honors those who have helped bring him into his inheritance by requesting Frodo bring him the crown and Mithrandir set it on his head.
The Trumpets blare, harps, viols, and flutes play. And thus begins the reign of King Elessar who pronounces his judgments on many lands and peoples. During his time the City was refurbished, the people were joyous, and the glory of the past age was preserved.
Eventually the Riders of Rohan and the sons of Elrond returned to their lands. The hobbits stay in Minas Tirith with Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf at Aragorn's request.
Then on Mount Mindolluin in the company of Gandalf, Aragorn finds the sapling tree springing forth from a mound of snow. It easily is uprooted and planted carefully in place of the withered tree. It grows and blossoms and the sign that Aragorn has been waiting for has been given.
Finally the Houses of Imladris and Lothlórien arrive at Minas Tirith and Elrond presents Aragorn with the Sceptre of Annúminas which he has earned. Therefore, Elrond laid Arwen's hand in Aragorn's and they were wed.
