When the time came for Merry to depart Edoras and make his way with the others to Rivendell, Eomer and Eowyn came to say farewell to Holdwine of the Mark. Eowyn brought a parting gift, an ancient horn, an heirloom of her house. It had been made by dwarfs, and came from the hoard of Scatha. Eorl the Young had brought it from the North.
Who was Scatha? Is there a tale written somewhere of Eorl the Young and how he came by this horn?
Eowyn said that she was giving this horn to Merry as a memorial. Memorial to what?
Do you think this a fitting gift? Why or why not? What does Eowyn say will happen when one blows upon this horn?

From: Ruscosenda Sent: 6/11/2003 2:02 PM Wasn't Scatha a worm(dragon)? That would explain why he had a hoard. I don't know if there is any more detailed info in Tolkien's writing. I think it was a fitting gift. Merry had proved himself a valiant warrior and was responsible for saving her life as well as many others that would have fallen to the Witch King. I believe, Eowyn says that when he blows the horn it will bring courage to his companions and fear to his enemies. -- Rusco
