Book 3, Chapter 1
The Dark Years or the Second Age
There are three phases of the Dark Years:
1. The remaining Exiled Elves were to return to Eressëa. Many chose not to and lingered in Middle Earth. They wanted to live in peace and in memory of the perfect West. They wanted to be the "highest" people in the world. If they returned they would be at the bottom of the hierarchy in Valinor. They were afraid of fading and became sad. They even made friends with the Dwarves for the first time ever. Many of the Elves listened to Sauron who promised to help them make the world as beautiful as Valinor, but his goal was to set up his own independent paradise to mock the gods.
2. Sauron grew as the new Dark Lord but he was smooth by deceiving them with friendlship and help. He encouraged the Elves to make the rings of power while making his own secret Ring to control all the others. Sauron set up his Kingdom and ruled over the Men who never had any dealings with Elves. They were mostly uncorrupt, ignorant, and lived a tribal life.
3. Also Númenor was growing in wealth, glory, wisdom, and long life. These were the descendents of Elros, brother of Elrond. The Númenóreans lived in a paradise setting near Eressëa and also had contact with Gilgalad's kingdom on the shores of Middle Earth. They began to look, act, and feel like Elves themselves. They had a longer lifespan of 3 times as long as before.
The gods had banned the Númenóreans so they could never sail to Eressëa nor too far west out of sight of their own land. They could never set foot on immortal lands. At first they obeyed of their own free will even though they did not understand the reasoning. Eventually they started grumbling about it and then finally they rebeled.
At first the Númenóreans brought gifts, art, and knowledge to the Wild Men of Middle Earth. Then they became proud and began to resent the ban. They wanted wealth and to escape death so they made lavish tombs and memorials. Finally they began to make weapons.
The 13th King of the line of Elros, Tar-Calion the Golden, learned that Sauron had taken the title of King and Lord of the World. He and his powerful fleets confronted Sauron and imprisoned him. Sauron was slick and humbled himself while working his way into the graces of the king who rewarded him as his chief councellor.
Sauron persuades Tar-Calion that the real god was the one in the Void and the ban was created by the Valar to keep the Kings of Men from becoming as great as the Valar. So Tar-Calion set sail into the West and broke the ban causing a war with the gods. The Valar were permitted by Iluvatar to destroy the old world, sink Númenor into the abyss, and remove Valinor and Eressëa from the world.
Elendil chief of the faithful Númenóreans and his sons, Isildur and Anarion, escaped disaster and set up kingdoms in Arnor and Gondor. Sauron barely escaped the ruin of Númenor and returned to Mordor.
The Dark Years or Second Age ended when the the Last Alliance of Elves and Men went against Sauron. Sauron was overthrown but Gilgalad and Elendil were slain. Isildur cut the ring from Sauron's hand and claimed it for his own. Then he was slain by Orcs and drowned in the Great River.
