From: DaleAnn (Original Message) Sent: 10/21/2002 5:07 PM Iarwain would like to track the Use of the Elvish Languages in TTT. He will be responsible to post, however, anyone may comment or add to it. Please check the FotR study for the late addition of a thread concerning this topic, also. He wrote: I would also like to add a thread regarding the use of Elvish within the two stories. I will e-mail you an extended study to see if you feel it has merit. I feel silly not seeing this opportunity earlier, and with the Two Towers study I wish to amend that. Namárië, Iarwain

From: IarwainBen-adar1 Sent: 10/28/2002 2:39 AM The Tracking of Elvish within “The Two Towers"
As with most of my life you have found me running behind. Apologies to DaleAnn, and all and sundry that read any of my Elvish study seems I'm always behind these days. Of course if you have just begun your in luck, as I will at least review all the names of characters that you’ve met in previous readings that have Elvish ties:
As with my previous windings, I will use the following abbreviations to avoid problems with writers (typing) cramp:
(Ad)- Andûnaic
(BS)- Black Speech
(D)-Dwarvish
(E)-Entish
(NM)- Northern Mannish
(Q)- Quenya
(Ro)- Rohirric
(S)- Sindarin
(T)- Telerian
(W)- Westron
And when relevant:
(OE)- Old English
(ME)- Middle English
(ON)- Old Norse
(F)- Finnish
Aside from these attested definitions there are many that are in question, so I may add:
(PE)- Primitive Elvish
(AQ)- Amanian Quenya
(VQ)- Vanyarian Quenya (Which in most cases will be referred to as (AQ), but there are discrepancies.)
(RE)- Root Elvish
(RBS)- Root Black Speech
I thank a long time member and author Karo6 for adding these insightful sections to my study. But with them has come an entire re-evaluation of my Elvish knowledge. Such is the joy of the studies that come after the Master, ever the new clue, ever the new rule!
In the case of translation difficulties or questions that seem to not fit into any regulated pattern I will offer:
(E)- Etymologies (Which in my opinion will cover the entire HOME series)
(HoME)- Histories of Middle-Earth (A set of books based upon Tolkien’s notes as he created this universe)
Fortunately we will not have to dwell too deeply within too many of these other abbreviations, I only place them there as a guide to any who wish to delve deeper. We also have a wonderful Elvish Dictionary and Language Board for any to pursue these studies further.
Review:
As I penned this review, I realized I could be forever reworking and researching for the review alone, so this is a short list of prominent names we have encountered. If I have neglected one that you are in question about please ask, and I’ll see what there is on it.
Anduin- (S) – Great River Aragorn- (S) – “Royal Tree”. Also referred to as Estel - (S) – “Hope”
Arwen- (S) – “Royal Maiden”. Elrond’s daughter.

Galadrim- (S) – “Tree People”
Gandalf- (NM) – “Elf of the Wand”, Mithrndir- (S) – “Grey Pilgrim”, Olorin- (Q) – The meaning is unclear here, “olos” is dream or vision and the suffix “in” is a dative plural so I translate it out to mean “of our dreams” but it is debatable. Tharkûn- (D) - No translation given, yet one more Dwarvish seceret.
Gil- galad- (S) – “Star of bright Light” The high King of the Noldor Killed at the Last Alliance.
Gildor Inglorion- (S) – “Star Lord”
Glamdring- (S) – “Foe Hammer”
Glorfindel- (S) – “Golden Haired”
Gondor- (S) – Stone Land
Don't worry, there is still a bit to review, and then of course the true study TTT. As I am posting this I am as well hard at work on that. Again, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask them. Also take advantage of the resouces already in place to study more difficult translations.

From: IarwainBen-adar1 Sent: 11/3/2002 12:02 AM Well here is a bit more, that I believe catches me up to almost the present. Such a long journey indeed! I will also attempt the "Plain Text Editor" as Glor suggested to avoid the Smarttags. I hope it works, as I am not in the state of mind for dissapointment!
Hadhodrond- (S) – “Dwarf Delvings” An earlier name for Moria- (S) – “Black Pit” Kazâd- dûm- (D) – “Dwerrowdelf” or “Mansions of the Dwarves” Just to verify (OE) for dwarf is Dweorh and (ME) is Dwerf, but I found no tie in for the term “Dwerrowdelf”
Haldir- (S) – “Tall Watcher”
Haradrim- (S) – “South People”
Iarwain Ben- adar- (S) – “Old without Father” Tom Bombadil- (W), Forn- (D) – “Of course there is no definition” Orald- (NM) – “Very Old”

Legolas- (S) – “Green Leaf”
Lembas- (S) – “Way Bread”
Lórien- (Q) or (S) -Dream Land I find many become confused by this area, and believe the Galadrim to speak Quenya, but they do not. They speak a form of Sindarin.

Mazarbul- (D) – “Records”
