In our Week Four reading, we begin to see the powers of Saruman. To this point, we were left to assume that he was a powerful wizard but we had very little detail as to his particular realm of influence. We learn that Saruman's chief talent lies in enchantment and persuasion.
"Suddenly another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment."
The implications of this power become very intriguing when you compare and contrast Sauron and Saruman. We are well aware that the power of the Ring lies in the ability to Command. Interesting coincidence, eh?
Another point of interest - Saruman's Ring. Yes ... he made one (or, perhaps ... many). From the Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/):
In July III 3018, when he was ready to reveal himself, Saruman set a trap for Gandalf, using the Wizard Radagast to lure him to Orthanc. When Gandalf came, Saruman revealed that he had made a Ring of his own, and that he was no longer Saruman the White, but claimed the title Saruman of Many Colours. When Gandalf refused to join him, he was imprisoned on the pinnacle of the Tower of Orthanc - Saruman hoped to gain the secret of the One Ring from him, or at least prevent Gandalf from using it himself.
So, here we may want to ponder whether Saruman's Ring had any power of enhancement.
What are your thoughts on Saruman's powers, his likeness to Sauron, and his Ring?

Saruman was but an example of the corruption that the ring and Sauron could weild. A mini-me if you will. A perfect example of how Saurons other rings dominated the races, and the malice that was poured into them.

If the three elven rings where saved from Sauron by keeping them from his tainting touch (sight?), would Saruman's ring be susceptable to Sauron's will? Does Saruman fear it will be when the One Ring is not just found, but wielded?
