The harvest holidays are upon us, and our thoughts turn to feasting (joining our friends, the hobbits, whose thoughts are always already there). And so, this month's poetry contest topic is
A Feast in Middle-Earth
Again, it's a very broad topic for you to munch on this month. Make it historical, whimsical, fantastical, mystical, or just plain and simple -- use your creativity to whip up a poem on any aspect of this topic.
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on November 30. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The poems will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
No length guidelines this month -- although the "No Epics, please" rule still holds.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: If you plan to participate in this contest, you may wish not to read the rest of this thread before you submit your own poem. It might affect your ability to remain "original." Then again, you may be able to draw inspiration from seeing others' work. It's your choice!
Have fun, and GO !!!

A Hobbit's Toast
So here's to mutton, and chicken and beef,
for a long days toll they'll keep ya on your feet;
and heres to to cake, crakers, and bread,
with out these snacks we Hobbits would be dead;
And one for bacon, eggs, and cheese,
because at breakfast times we all love these;
And lest we forget wine and mead in this toast,
But it'd be th' BEER in my mug that I love most!

FEAST FOR THE CLEANSING OF THE GREENWOOD
Beachwood boughs with tips aflame.
By lamp lit paths they slowly came.
Laden carts rolled along, and everywhere there was a song
Oh Greenwood great, my woodland realm.
Crown of berries, red leaves his helm,
Elvenking on chair of carven wood, elves about, grey of hood.
Vintage wine of Dorwinion Gardens.
Living stone halls, great hearths to warm in.
Leave ponies at the stable, for you are called to Thranduil's table.
How now as Mirkwood were thee called?
Dol Guldur's shadow, orcs, black squirrels,
Insect eyes in the night, enchanted streams, spider fright.
Yet Great Eye could not prevail.
Eyrn Lasgalen was named, and cleansed was vale.
Come feast my friends, when you are able.
Your place is safe at Thranduil's table.

"Thoughts of A Feast"
Cabbages and Carrots stew
Bacon and Tomatoes,for quite a few
A Barrel of Ale,some Seedcake too
All this feast,too share with you
Eggs to scramble, and to fry
Apples for some Apple Pie
Pumpkins from the farmer's patch
Be sure to make enough pies to last
Heavenly smells from the kitchen spread
The wafting aroma of fresh baked Bread
Whatever shall we have to drink
Stout Ale, and lemonade, make it pink
When all is done
What's left to be said
A feast is best,
When shared with friends

This is pretty scarey but after all you writers that i keep harranging to do art, it seems i should have to write?
"it is a far, far better thing i do..."
Majah
No Feast is too massive
Nor one too scare
Never failing to satisfy
like a lover's embrace
For it's not just the food
You'll do well to note
It's the company you share
and the "Fellowship" it promotes!

This month my humble submission is in the form of a Villanelle. It was challenging to try to conform to the rules of this form.
=========================================================
To eat his fill is a hobbit's delight.
A table well-spread brings joy to his heart.
The well-fed hobbit then enjoys his pipe.
First Breakfast is served with the morning light;
Once cleared, Second Breakfast is soon to start.
To eat his fill is a hobbit's delight.
The day moves on, the sun climbs to its height.
Elevensies and Lunch aren't far apart. . .
The well-fed hobbit then enjoys his pipe.
Sweet fruits, crispy bacon, tomatoes ripe,
warm fresh bread and apples juicy and tart -
to eat his fill is a hobbit's delight.
Tea-time now and Suppertime's in sight,
Herbs and stewed rabbit simm'ring on the hearth.
The well-fed hobbit then enjoys his pipe.
After supper beneath the soft moonlight,
while filling up the corners, speeches start.
To eat his fill is a hobbit's delight;
The well-fed hobbit then enjoys his pipe.

I am so sorry this is late! I was out Christmas shopping all weekend with my mother in law! I really meant to do a poem encompassing all of ME feasts but couldn't get the words down but I did come up with this.
A Feast in the House of Tom Bombadil
There is a meal of such delight
Served amid yellow candlelight.
Fresh waterlilies for décor
Guests always ask for more.
Yellow cream and honeycomb
Make one feel quite at home.
Green herbs, cheese, and milk
Creamy and smooth as silk.
Butter, ripe berries, and white bread
Laid out in a lovely spread.
Fresh waterlilies for décor
Guests always ask for more.
When filled to your heart's desire
Relax beside an applewood fire.
Guests will wish to tarry
In the house of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.

Wow -- what a fantastic feast you've prepared! You all have really outdone yourselves this month. I know everyone joins me in sending major kudos and a huge thank-you to each of our poet-participants!
And now it's time for everyone to support your favorite poems by sending me your votes. I'm going to try something different this month; I hope this plan will allow more poems to be recognized, help those who have a hard time choosing just one poem to vote for, and also give our poets a little bit more in the way of an actual award.
So, this month (and in future, if this plan works) our contest will have first, second, and third place winners. Each will receive a prize ribbon in the form of a little picture file (similar to a sig file) which they will have the right to display in each of their posts through the end of the month. OK so far?
So everyone, when you send your vote, please indicate your choices for first, second, and third place. Votes are due to my email address (available by clicking on my underlined name at the top of this post) by Friday night at midnight (an hour past eleven p.m. on Dec. 6). I'll tabulate the votes and post the results on Saturday. If anyone has any questions in the meantime, just email me.
Vote and express your opinion! Thanks, everyone. And thanks again to our wonderful poets.
Olórië
