I made this for someone at another site, that needed a poem about Eowyn:
And We Were Everyday, Together.....
Oh Rohan! Before I could walk, you horsed me
Before I could talk, I swore an allegiance
Oh Rohan! Before battle struck, they gave me a shield
Before I could love, they gave me duty.
The Mearas run free on the plain, but not I!
Oh Rohan! My kin ride forth in great battles
My fate is no longer my own
From my arms they tear the shield of war
and chain me here at our home
The grass is green under the feet of the Mearas!
Oh Rohan! Can you hear the Maiden"s call?
Is there no sympathy at all?
For one who can never be King
but a great queen, by this One Ring?
The Mearas run, while the grass is still green!
His heart is taken, so no hope for me
not even a ship to sail the sea
But death in battle, if never a crown
perhaps in this, I win reknown
And in battle, the Mearas are fierce!
O Rohan! I ride to death but I know
As the arrows are strung to the bow
Great deeds are not made by men
But those who have faith in the end
The Mearas obey their masters!
Blood lust upon me, I charge into fate
A Shield Maidens" fury is one that can"t wait
I brandish my sword and gallop and sing
For Rohan and Glory!! And Theoden King!!
The Mearas always die beside their masters.

You have captured the essence of Éowyn in your poem! She is one of my favorite characters in the story. Her desire to ride and fight for her country, people, land, king, and Middle-earth is an inspiration for me. Her frustration at being left behind because she is a woman has always touched my soul. I was very moved by her bravery on the Pelennor Fields and very pleased of the feat she (and Merry) accomplished there! Hail! Éowyn, shieldmaiden of Rohan!

Oh Fangorn that poem is so wonderful! It moved me to tears. I agree with what's already been stated... you have completely captured Eowyn. Spectacular!

ahhh.....nevermind......you mean the quote symbol instead of the apostrophe............gotcha. Yes, that does need to be fixed....thanks for pointing it out, seems I need to proof punctuation as well as spelling. I always wondered though, did ya ever see those quotes where they do 'this' instead of "this"? What is that about??

Also, I took a liberty with the line, "The Mearas always die besides their masters". In fact, I do not know this to be a fact, but for both poetical effect, and my own preferences, I used it anyway. We know factually, the cannon states that horses were given to Aragorn and company while in persuit of Merry and Pippin, that had lost their masters. However, even though great steeds of Rohan, they were not necessarily Mearas. Also, given what we know of the greatest Meara, Shadowfax, I daresay he would have died beside Gandalf, should the wizard have fallen. Also, Theoden was KING, so should we not take for granted he rode a Meara? And did the horse not die with him? Views on this are welcome.
