We need to encourage more Friends to join our poetry contest! Let's re-afirm the fact that the fun is in the participation, which I enjoy far more than winning. So my pledge is this. For every new Friend that enters, who has never before tried their hand at poetry, I will write a poem for you on the topic of your choice to use as you see fit, and give up any and all rights to it. I entreat other of our poets to think of a way to increase participation. If you are an artist, perhaps you can offer a specially done sig for new entries. If you are a web designer, perhaps an awards page at this or another site. I am sure we can come up with more!

I know I really enjoy reading our Friends poetry. I also like that there is a theme for each month that we can all focus on and develop. I even liked the contest where we had to use alliteration. That was a challenge and once I got started with it, it became easier!
I never thought of myself as a poet but I have tried my hand in these contests. It is not an easy thing for me to do, but I think I have improved with each poem that I have entered.
Hmmmmm.....sigs created for the poets.....now that is an interesting idea!

One thing I really enjoy about the poetry contests is trying my hand at different styles - such as alliterative, and the time I tried a Villanelle. One day I hope someone will actually lead a study here on writing poetry in different styles, focusing, of course, on the ones Tolkien used.
In the upcoming Hobbit study, my goal is to coordinate poetry challenges to go along with the study. Watch for it! Majah has already agreed to coordinate art challenges, too. There may even be prizes for participation! There will definitely be recognition.

i am with your Storm...poetry is not my forte but because this group has made it fun and has been so encouraging i have entered every contest (except maybe 1 or 2) even tho i do not have the "gift of bard". and i have learned from the contests we have had...a lot in fact!!!
i picked up on the sig idea right way and thought us "arty" people could come up with something kind of like the participation awards for the art contests i made... only personalized with the name of each person who has entered the contests. maybe something that says Tolkien Ring Poets Society or something like that... small maybe even a blinkie that they can attach to their emails and/or message posts!
(i guess that is art discussion but seemed to fit in this thread!)
BUT...i do have to repeat that i think more people would participate if we kept on task and started and ended our contests as we promise! i do not usually win but it still keeps my excitement level up when i get to check in and see how everyone has done...and then you are hepped up enough to start your next one!
ok enough blab from me...great ideas here tho

Needless to say, I really enjoy reading our Friends' poetry, too. And the one thing I enjoy most about the contests is seeing new poets enter. It really does take some courage, so I appreciate that everyone on TR takes such care to create an environment in which new poets can feel comfortable making their debut. Thanks, gang, give yourselves a hand!
There are some seriously good ideas on this thread. I especially like the idea of a "Poets' Circle" page on which all entrants can be listed and folks can post their prize ribbons and/or sigs; or even just a plaque-style page that lists monthly winners. I'll be adding Rivers-style challenges to future poetry contests, but I don't want to make it so difficult that we discourage newbie poets. Perhaps we can institute a quarterly "special challenge" event -- there we might explore villanelles and other relatively complex forms. What do you think?
Thanks for everyone's feedback and ideas on making the contests better!
Olórië

i have started a little on some of these suggestions...
i have made a couple of Signature Tags (for poets and artists) that will be personalized with each individual's name that participates...they are in this an album on Multiply,
check them out and give me some imput?
tolkiensring.multiply.com/photos/album/52/Artist_and_Poet_Signature_Tags#2
as soon as i get some feedback, i will begin to make these for all who have entered work previously and for anyone new who comes to play with us...
take care my fellow creativity wizards.

second try
I was so excited that I got logged in without windows shutting down, and then I didn't actually get a message posted.
Majah, I love your banners! Awesome!! By the way, folks, she's got some great art challenges coming up to coordinate with the Hobbit study.
Olorie, I look forward to exploring different poetry forms in future contests. In fact, I already tried my hand at a villanelle. The quarterly "special" will be a great way to keep the monthly contests from becoming too intimidating for budding poets. By the way, can I interest you in coordinating some poetry challenges with the Hobbit study? <grovelling>

Majah, your sigs are wonderful! Very nicely done. I think I would prefer a slight change in wording -- 'TR Poets Circle' rather than 'Official TR Poet.' A little more welcoming, perhaps. Thanks!
Sparrow, glad you like the idea of a quarterly challenge. And I reFriend your villanelle -- I was really impressed!
