Tolkien's Birthday Toast!
The toast is: "The Professor"
At 9pm (local times) on January 3rd fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday in the year that sees the 50th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien fans have many things to celebrate in this period:
+ The Lord of the Rings was published 50 years ago (the original three volumes appearing between July 1954 - October 1955).
+ The house where Tolkien wrote most of "The Lord of the Rings" 22 Northmoor Road, Oxford has been awarded Grade II listing.
+ The Lord of the Rings has been voted best book in recent polls in Germany and Australia.
+ All three of Peter Jackson's films of The Lord of the Rings are now available on DVD in extended editions
+ Three major events for fans of the book and the films are coming this year:
* Tolkien 2005: The Ring Goes Ever On. Celebrating 50 Years of The Lord of the Rings 11th-15th August at Aston University, Birmingham.

The Tolkien Society has a webpage www.tolkiensociety.org.uk/toast/2005 where Tolkien fans across the globe can let other fans know where they'll be celebrating if they're hosting a party, or just what particular tipple they'll be raising. Fans will be able to check the webpage and see who is celebrating where and if they wish to get in touch and join in.
The Birthday Toast event should be understood to consist of the saying of the toast and a drink (not necessarily alcoholic) of an individuals' choice.
