That’s good, Andy!
How much rain do you get in a typical monsoon season?

For August, the valley floor averages 2.39 inches of rain, this year for August we've had 1.52 inches, counting yesterday's evening pour. Mount Lemmon usually gets four times the August rainfall that we get down here. So far they've had about 5 inches, including yesterday's 2 inch fall. I guess we are a bit above the 50% mark, with a lot of that coming just yesterday.

What sort of impact do you think this lack of rain will cause for regrowth in the burned areas?
Our "real rain" was 3/4". I'll take it. Made the grass happy, but our trees need inches.

Hmmm, too much rain would wash out the burnt areas, too little should retard the development of a covering vegetation, grasses, new bushes to hold the soil in place. I'll see if the local forestry service has anything to say on this...
Oooo, 3/4 in one fall sounds great -- but yeah, trees need more.

Noooooooooo!!! I feel for all the birds, but now I am worried about my barn swallows. They had a good year here this year, rearing quite a few broods, and no dead babies found on the ground. I did a search for migratory maps. My swallows likely traveled through Texas on their way south. Lots of dead birds have been found there, too. No wonder it was silent, Andy.

Oh noooooo. Those fires are so out of hand. I read at least four people intentionally started fires in California, Oregon, and Washington. And since everything is dry already, it all burns up fast. The smoke is already hitting Illinois and you can see the red around the sun. This smoke can't help the birds breathing.

Steve said he saw some swallows nearby about a 1/3 of a mile away, so, maybe ours haven't all left, yet.

Hard to tell what's going on lately, so much weather instability. Our finches, sparrows and desert wrens are here year-round, not sure if the swallows down at the grocery store porches migrate at all, will check next time shopping to see if they are still around.

More bad news on the bird die-off: www.audubon.org/news/the-southwest-facing-unprecedented-migratory-bird-dieKeep thinking about canaries in the coal mines... I have not seen my backyard family of goldfinches for about four days, getting worried. Still have the sparrows and the house finches, but not as many as just last week. Thinking of putting out some seed, see who shows up. The plume of California smog is back, and instead of staying high above the mountains, it is now down to about the 6000 foot level. Air quality warnings are flashing on local TV for people with asthma, emphysema, or other lung/ breathing conditions. Feel very sorry for those actually in California. No rain forecast for next 10 days.

I hope bird seed can help Andy. Any food might help if they can't get their normal supply.
My sister is in Chico, CA and says smoke and ash is everywhere. They are not in the fire path but it is closer to them than any other CA fire has been. They are getting out of CA is soon as their lease is up (Next February). BUT . . . They plan to move to Pensacola FL which isn't doing very well now. She says they'd rather deal with tornadoes than fire. They both seem terrible to me. They moved from FL about 5yrs ago.

They are gorgeous animals. Hope they don't cause a problem in which they get in trouble for.
