Hey Storm & Desi: I went tonight to see the Royal Lipizzaner Show here in Yakima. It was great! Have you guys ever seen them? It's mind boggling to think about the amount of training & time it takes to produce an animal capable of such feats! They had one Andalusian horse who did some of the moves used in the bullring, however they did not say in the narration that they use horses in the bullring now & I don't know if they still do. Of course I know that they used to! Arwen's horse in FotR is an Andulusian. I got a video of the horses & it has one of them doing a multiple courbette, that's the move where the horse rears up & 'hops' forward on it's hind legs & the horse in this video hops multiple times; in the shows it's usually only once! And do you know that those animals never even break a sweat! Well, i just had to share w/somebody who digs horses like I do! So if this show comes to your town, go see it by all means!! Vanye

I saw the Lipizzaners on television a long time ago. I don't remember if it was a special on them in particular or if they were in a movie I was watching. They were very impressive!
Are they touring the USA? I will have to watch to see if they come to my area. They would be worth seeing I am sure!

I'll have to look them up and see if they have any kind of online schedule. Around her we have a Midevil Times and that is pretty cool to watch. Matter of fact one of the guys from there has come and watched Stormrider and my drill team practice and he gave us pointers.

Hey Desi & Storm: I don't know if you've seen this yet but I think you'll love it! I am simply amazed by it! Just Google Stacey Westfall. I don't know how to put a link in a posting. 8^( Vanye

Yes, someone emailed me the link for Stacey. Very impressive. She has a very nice horse, too.
It seems that many people are working on training their horses to ride bridleless lately. I saw on Dish Network a trainer in Australia (I can't remember his name) demonstrating how to train your horse to ride bridleless.
My youngest daughter was also looking for a new horse and came across a horse that also did that. The video she watched was impressive, too, but when she went to ride the horse herself, she wasn't that impressed. She had trouble getting it to turn right I think. Then Desi and the person who has been riding the horse were having trouble getting it to ride nicely for them.

Yeah Storm: what is so amazing is how she maintains her seat on the fast stop especially. When she was on Ellen's show Ellen commented on how Stacey was hanging on. But I know from experience that so much depends on being over the horses center of gravity at all times cuz when you are bareback that's the name of the game. If you get left behind the horses movement you will come flying off! Vanye 8^)

My girls can ride bareback but I don't like it. It feels funny and I am too afraid. I have ridden Storm bareback while she walked, and it felt really funny. I didn't even attempt to trot or lope! I guess if I had had a horse when I was younger I may have been braver and tried it.
And the trainer from Australia is Clinton Anderson.

Storm-Well when I got my horse my Dad told me that I couldn't use a saddle til I learned to get on & stick on w/o one. So that's what I did & then he said if I didn't wear boots when riding I still couldn't ride w/the saddle. My horse would sometimes 'spook' at something & jump 12 ft. sideways & some how i stayed w/ her when she did this. When you are bareback you just feel those muscles tensing & you go w/the motion! Many trainers start students off bareback & no reins on a longe line so you have to develop a good 'seat' to stay on. The Native -American warriors weren't called the 'world's greatest light cavalry' for nothing-they always rode bareback! Vanye 8^)

Good for you! Sticking on when your horse jumped 12ft sideways. That happened to me once but I was in a saddle and Melony only jumped about 6ft sideways. I did stay in, too.
I didn't start riding until I was around 43 years old and too set in my ways and not really that used to riding on a horse. So I did start taking lessons when I got Storm about 3 years later and we learned together. She was 3 years old and I was 46 by then! Good thing she was a good girl and took everything calmly.
Our trainer never suggested that I try bareback. I just tried it once on Storm at home. I am sure it really would have been a good way to learn to stay on and get the proper seat. If I had been a lot younger, I wouldn't have minded really trying it.

I started riding English so with that being a small saddle you do learn to feel the horse under you and I think that has helped me feel comfortable bare back, plus the fact that I trust my horse and know that she is easy to que.
Right now I am trying to learn stunts for the drill team my sister and I are on. It is going so so...I am very bruised and sore. I am trying to run along side of the horse and jump on, trying to be riding and then swing my legs behind my cross them which makes me end up sitting backwards in the saddle (I can do this at the walk, but not the canter). I also stand in one stirrup and kick my other leg out behind me like a figure skater (I can do this one ok). My sister lays her back on the saddle and kicks her legs up in the air riding along the rail without holding the reins.

I assume you know what the sport of vaulting is. They are considering making it an Olympic sport in the equestrian division. I hope that they do so as I would really love to see it. The Pony Club in the UK does this for competition & to teach the kids to be good riders whose seats are not dependent on either saddle or reins. I think that some 4H clubs in the states also do this.
