Sorry for the delay. Real Life had intruded viscously upon me. The Poetry Contest this month, will again coincide with the Art Contest. "Celebrations"
In Tolkien's works, there were many celebrations. From small one's like the Hobbits have a bath, to larger ones like Bilbo's Party to really big ones like the Coronation of King Elessar. Any and all celebrations in Tolkien's work are allowed as topics. Again, no epics please. Have fun!

"Celebrations," eh? Whot? Like Sauron's birthday? Ok...
I'll see if I can find something guarenteed (almost) not to upset the hobbits at their second teas.
Sorry to hear about the RL situation, hope things improve soon!

Bilbo Celebrates His Last Spring in Rivendell
I am in some need of a spiritual renewal this day, would love to wander somewhere alongside an energetic brook that weaves a clever-twisting path through a greening forest.
Somewhere up in the highlands the first rains of late winter must be making soft gaps in the aging snow, carving bright runnels through the mounded stuff.
Tomorrow, as the clouds lift, there will be great puddles of chill, clean water ringing the drifts, each reflecting a small, hot, Sun, drenching the scapes with a new intensity.
Not too many such days in close succession will be required to bring out the mosses, and then the young snow drops.
Their petals will be balled against the cold, as they hang face downward on curve-necked stems, waiting for a final thaw to open them completely.
If my ancient Luck still holds, perhaps I'll catch those few soft minutes of life's renewal, and celebrate with the Snow Drops, the start of one more, boisterous Spring.

The Long-Expected Party
Bilbo’s 111 birthday is a special day, Everyone is invited to come and play. So many plans for the long expected party.
Carts were rolled up the Hill, More carts and more carts still. Provisions were brought for the long expected party.
There was no admittance, Except on party business. Private preparations for the long expected party.
Ropes, and poles for tents covered the field, The Gaffer’s gardening even took yield. Tents went up for the long expected party.
The tree was inside it, Lights were hung and lit. A kitchen too for the long expected party.
The guests were met, Dances, games, food and drink were set. Mathoms given at the long expected party.
Gandalf’s fireworks were started, They were not for the fainthearted. A dragon swooping down towards the long expected party.
A splendid supper for all one might boasts, A special family dinner for one gross. One hundred and forty-four fed at the long expected party.
Then the dreaded after dinner speech, My dear people Bilbo did preach. Then Goodbye and he was gone from the long expected party.

I am not sure now, if double entries are allowed... But I'll risk it anyway. Trying something rhymed and somewhat metrical, just for the heck of it.
Frodo: "In that land, maybe, we were in a time that has elsewhere long gone by. ... And I don't remember any moon, either new or old, in Caras Galadon: only stars by night and sun by day." (FotR, "The Great River," Omnibus, p. 408)
New Moon Celebration In Lorien
Upon the Lady's Elven hand, white Nenya failed in Lorien and Time was let into that land, the Gift-Flower of the Ring.
This was the first year the Mallorn did not retain its summer-leaves, but shed them in the fast hail-winds like all the other trees.
This was also the first year when, the Elven voices lost their song and Light failed in Lorien, in Caras Galadon.
The Lady of the Woodland Realm had passed like some quick shadow grey beneath the oak, the beech, the elm to find the Ocean's spray.
Those who stayed found a diff'rent night as a new Moon rose to shine there, and spill its unfamiliar light into the troubled air.
Then came a faint and ancient tune, a celebration now restored, an Elven greeting to the Moon, unseen for ages, still adored.

Carry Me Home The grass was sweet beneath my feet Bag End was big and full of room And always was there enough to eat Dear Bilbo, how came we upon this doom? The Took blood took us by surprise Adventure was our final demise And now when hope leaves me alone Where is the ship to carry me home? The ship is moored and I celebrate A parting that just can't wait To be whole again, to open the gate To a life worth living Not in this Middle-earth can I claim A life like one that was the same As once I knew, no matter where I roam A ship! A ship! To carry me home! My shoulder hurts, my mind is ill My heart rests here with you all still But celebrate, my soul is free Let it drop into the sea Remember me......when gulls cry......

saurons birthday
Sulfar plumes jumped on top of all the things we most forgot the dead, the dying and the what not Happy Birthday Sauron
Blood and Death, is most admired Violence is quickly squired And those who protest are mostly fired Happy Birthday Sauron
Twist the Elves, kill at will Conquer minds, you know the drill Do not let even ONE escape Happy Birthday Sauron

Galadriel's Eyes How am I to write about such beauty? My quill is broken...the organ of my imagination If I could write of the beauty of her eyes, I was born to look in them, and know myself For ONE kiss would I defy A thousand devils She comes....... Her footfalls are like the pounding of my heart With each step, the radiance of life grows stronger, and I am overcome I prod myself and say "If you break, it it because you are brittle" Yet no hope is found. Only the longing of her gaze I am terrified, but cannot look away She smiles and touches my cheek At once, I am full up "Why do you howl, when it is I that am bitten?" I like a dog for laughs, and pigs feet marinated in junniper berry But soon will my breath be gone.....and I pray it is you that takes it.

(i know we are not supposed to comment during the contest but this last entry has left me weak of breath...stunning Fang!) unfortunately i have to follow that beauty with this pretty tepid fare....sigh.... M A Marriage of ProphecyAs I lay dying of grief and mourn I saw my hand in a being so young I drift as I hurt and yet I still love A tear escapes me my eyes clear up I see the sun a burning light Upon two heads eyes locked in delight A joining of hands and lives and hearts The way it was told in my dreams every night!

Soooo Sorry for the loooong delay. Unless anyone has any objections, I will declare the Jan. contest closed, skip Feb., since it almost past anyway, and decide on a topic for March.
Let me know if there are any objections before I proceed. Also what are your thoughts on running two month long contests instead of one month long? I think it will allow more time for people who may feel rushed with the one month time frame.

I like the idea of having two months to get my art and poems together for posting. Great idea! However, the Feb/March topic on "Favorite Valar" is slipping away and I have not done a darn thing on it yet! So there goes the first month!
