"BEORN IN ACTION" The Poetry Contest for August will concern BEORN. For this contest there is no limitation on the type of poetry allowed, so long as it concerns Beorn. Our recommendation is to follow the "Hobbit Study" , and the coinciding "Art Study" and try to fuse as many factors as possible. Ideally, this would mean posting your own Art Entry, and then writing a poem about it. Being that we are not all poets or artists, it is a good alternative to wait for one or the other. If a member posts an art entry that inspires you, write a poem about it (be sure to note the inspiration). Likewise, if a poet inspires you to create an art piece, also give credit where do. That being said, enjoy this multi-faceted trip into the Hobbit. A unique experiment you can ONLY find here at Tolkien's Ring! Any questions or comments, feel free to post them on the open discussin thread here. As always, the "no epics, please" rule is in force!

Path To Beorn’s Lodgings
Flower patches as far as you can see. Waving patches of sweet cockscomb clover Stretching wide and far just like a great sea. A purple, white and green pasture cover.
Bigger than your thumb kind of bumble bee. Buzzing, whirring and droning in the air The sounds of the bees hard at work with glee. Making honey with lots of special care.
A large wood of very ancient oak tree, Standing very tall and extremely proud. Bark so thick and knotted like an old knee. Branches and leaves each reaching to a cloud.

I came upon a cabin in the woods Fully stocked and with many sundry goods Animals at play, yard stocked full of hay And bees that buzz the honey combs all day
A bear would surely love this cabin fair Quiet and cozy, honey in the air A man would too if he were so inclined To change his skin and seek the other side
Beorn is master and loves his wild ways He keeps the peace and lots of orcs he slays To change your skin is really not that hard When what you seek is love in your own yard.

Respite at Beorn’s Lodge
“What is a skin-changer?” Mr. Baggins queried. “Is it a furrier who makes animal rugs and capes?”
“No, no, NO!” answered Gandalf looking worried. “It is someone who can change into various shapes.”
“Beorn can change his skin from man to bear. And he is easy to anger but kind if humored. So remember your manners and please don’t stare! He also talks to his animals, or so it is rumored.”
Allowing for the skin changer’s moods and airs, Gandalf told an intriguing tale he was sure to savor. When the throng was sprung on their host in pairs, They took Gandalf’s advice and used polite behavior.
At a clap from Beorn’s hands, the troop was amazed As white ponies, grey dogs, and sheep set the table. Upon this sight, Thorin’s Company gazed. Beorn’s rapport with animals was not a fable!
Gandalf’s tale impressed him--Beorn hated goblins. After a few night’s travel in a bear’s appearance, He retuned with goblin and warg heads a-bobbin’
The Great Goblin was killed by his guests’ interference!
Chuckling at the Great Goblin’s demise, Beorn was impressed—they earned his friendship. For the journey to the forest he lent animals and supplies And a great bear shadowed them for part of their trip.
Reaching the forest they bid farewell to the ponies, And shambling after them went a shape like a bear. They turned to the east, arranging their belongings. For there were many days ahead and much yet to fear.

man...i hate to follow such excellant entries! gulp...here goes!
"Queer" Hospitality
In exchange for a tale almost too good for truth.
Sweet honey mead and the lamps burning low.
A grand feast of a kind, enchanting…a bit strange?
Tables laid with abundance, by creatures most special.
The host---too is odd and his tales quite frightening.
Of orcs, wolves & goblins and a dark forest pending.
His strength is unmatched and his courage unbounded.
He shares of his gifts, his knowledge and “children”.
Guided and protected by this mysterious shadow self.
Bilbo et all are pure blessed by his presence.
