Tom Bombadil says this in reply to Pippin's question regarding possible continued pursuit by the Black Riders. (FotR, Bk I, Ch. VIII).
Who said this, and why:
'It's good to be able to see again', said ......, breathing deep. 'Do you know, I thought for a bit that I had lost my sight?'

ah god..... why do i have my finger in soooo many pies! quickly, i ask who said this and why,
'Peace' said , for a fleeting moment his voice was less suave, and a light flickered in his eyes and was gone. 'I do not speak to you yet, Gimli Gloin's son,' he said. 'Far away is your home and small concern of yours are the troubles in this land. But it was not by design of your own that you have become embroiled in them, and so I will not blame such part as you have played- a valiant one, I doubt not. But i pray you, allow me first to speak with the King of Rohan,my neighbor, and once my friend.'

Saruman said this in the chapter "The Voice of Saruman", TTT, when Gandalf and the others went to speak to him after Isengard's destruction by the Ents.
Who said this and why:
"You are full of courtesy this morning," laughed ..... "But maybe, if we had not arrived, you would already have been keeping one another company again."

Legolas said this to Merry, as the Hobbits happily raided the stores of Isengard to feed their friends (naturally offering to join them in the meal ) (TTT, Bk III, Ch IX). Who said this, and why:

Legolas says this (regarding Aragorn) as he is recounting the travails faced along the Paths of the Dead; he tells this to Merry and Pippin, as Gimli was reluctant to speak of the experience. (RotK, Bk. V, Ch. IX)
