On setting out, Bilbo supposed, "adventures were not so bad after all." Is Bilbo still wavering at this point? What do you think of adventures? Have you ever had one? Would you like to have one? Did it bring you gain or loss, or both?

I think Bilbo wavered through his entire adventure. I like advernture because I enjoy doing new and different things. Have I been on adventures...Yes, because I concider all of the vacations I have been on adventures.

I agree with Desi that Bilbo wavered through his entire adventure. At the beginning he might have found the adventure somewhat pleasant, but then bad and dangerous things had not started to happen yet.
I think everyone has had adventures in one way or another. What I consider an adventure is usually but not always a bad experience. Luckily though, I've never suffered what could be regarded as a permanent harm, so I usually laugh with my past adventures when recalling them. I believe that adventures, either good or bad (and especially the bad ones), help us learn from our mistakes and become more wise. Avoiding adventures and always playing it safe is not conducive to developing as a person through life.

i am thinking by using the word adventure, you already expect it to be a little risky...otherwise, it would just be a trip right? i think Bilbo could be excited by the thought of his "adventure" and yet be nervous as it would come to pass.....no wonder he wavered!!!

I think that to a hobbit, just stepping out your door and heading out on the road leading away from the Shire was considered an adventure. Hobbits preferred to stay at home and have an ordinary life. They were content in the Shire--who won't be?
Just the fact that Bilbo had to carry his belongings on his back, sleep under the stars, in the company of Dwarves and a Wizard was an adventure to begin with! That part was not so bad.
But the mission of the adventure was what was intimidating! The dangerous part was far away yet as far as Bilbo knew. Having to face down a dragon and retrieve a stolen treasure from him was a very daunting task.

Bilbo may have wavered thoughout the adventure, but he kept on going regardless of the hardships and trouble they kept encountering. He grew in stamina and truely became a hobbit that is more than meets the eye!
