This is a lovely poem, that I had quite forgot we had dissected some of the terms in, when doing the "Fun and Games" board. Only nagging question I have, is that Tolkien did not reveal the message he had set out with. I would be happy to entertain some ideas on that message, and have some good fun along the way. Anyone care to start?

Aha, the light went on, does it have something to do with the nature of the mariner? ~ fallohide

Glor if I read you right at the end of the poem the Mariner remembers the message he was supposed to deliver so he sets out again. Perhaps what Tolkien is saying is tht we get so caught up in the journey of life that we forget our purpose. We set forth to achieve something and get so caught up in the "errantry" of life that we get back to square one and remember what it was we were setting out to do and start all over again.

Very plausable explanation, Rivers. And probably right. I was just wondering if anyone can guess at the message he started out with, or remembered. I was hoping for some fun laughs, as I know there is no definative answer for this question.

How about his message was "Find DaleAnn at all costs, and remove her from the mouth of the tiny greeen smoker," etc.

Glor was referring to under Fun and Games, "What does this word mean", messages 51 to 55, when Glor, Karo6 and myself decipher part of this poem. It's worth a perusal!
As to the message, hmmm, I think the message was actually to DaleAnn, master of disguise, to track down the Little Green Smoker, who has been missing from these boards for too long. But since Dale Ann is so good with disguises, she will be a challenge to track down. No wonder our mariner became befuddled.

Rivers and Glor:
If the Mariner had a message to deliver and was distracted by so many things along the way, then he is not displaying dependability in his job. What would your Boss think if he gave you a project and it took you days to even remember to do it because you were out wandering and goofing off?
And then after he remembered the message he had to start all over...I bet he got distracted a second time around, too!

Wow whats gotten in to me I am the goofiest guy I know and I go and get deep on a silly question.( Bad form Rivers)
What I had meant to say was the message is " I'm not from here I'm from somewhere else".
