The picture was lost--It was a picture entitled "The Paths of the Dead" by Inger Edelfeldt
Bk 5, Ch 2, SUMMARY: The Passing of the Grey Company
What intrigues me most about this chapter is the number of oaths of allegiance that are made and broken and the manner in which they are sworn, forsworn, and renewed. As you read through the passages, you might want to make personal notes on your insights into these vows of loyalty.
Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Merry accompany King Theoden and his army back to Edoras. Before they reach their destination, they are intercepted by the Ranger, Halbarad along with 30 of his kindred and the sons of Elrond. They have received a summons to find Aragorn and they bear a message from the house of Elrond: "The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead." And with them they also bring the standard made by Arwen and, Rohirym,, Aragorn’s horse.
After careful deliberation, Aragorn decides to ride on the Paths of the Dead. In a discussion with Legolas and Gimli, the Ranger tells them of his decision to awaken the dead and reveals that he has looked into the palantir. Gimili and Legolas decide to ride with Aragorn and proceed ahead of the army to Edoras. Merry, having made an oath of fealty to Theoden, remains with the King’s army.
In route, Aragorn stops in Dunharrow where he is the guest of Eowyn. The woman is immediately smitten by the Ranger. First, she tries to dissuade Aragorn from taking his chosen path fearing for his life. Then she begs him to take her with him. He does neither and continues on his quest to awaken the dead to the disquietude of the shieldmaiden.
The Dead that once made an oath to his forefather, Isildur, during the first war against Sauron but forswore that oath. Aragorn cries out to them, ". . . I summon you to the stone of Erech." When they reach the stone, Aragorn asks the oath breakers why they have come. They answer, "To fulfil our oath and have peace." Aragorn answers that they must follow him to Pelargir upon Anduin to clean the land of the servants of Sauron. When they have completed their task, Aragorn promises that they shall have peace and depart forever. He then reveals himself to them, "For I am Elessar, Isildur’s heir of Gondor."
