Thanks to Dernhelm, Merry is able to ride with the Rohirrim to Gondor. He is tired from the rugged riding and now is wondering if the King is aware of his presence and whether or not he is angry with him. He is completely ignored by the other Riders.
Elfhelm, the Marshal of the éored Merry has been riding with, trips over him. Suddenly they hear drum beats in the hills. Merry believes the enemy is coming but Elfhelm tells him that he hears the Woses that haunt Druadan Forest and that they use poison arrows. Luckily, the Woses are not haunting the Riders but wish to speak with Théoden King.
Merry follows Elfhelm and finds Théoden and Éomer speaking with a strange squat shaped man that reminds him of the ancient Púkel-men statues of Dunharrow. Merry is surprised that Ghân-buri-Ghân speaks the Common Speech and listens intently as he brings news to Théoden that Gondor is shut and fires burn all around and inside it. He tells that more gorgûn (Wose lingo for 'Orcs') are on their way to Gondor and that enemy troops far outnumber those of the Riders.
Ghân-buri-Ghân offers Théoden a deal to take the Riders by a long forgotten road to get around the Orc patrols. The Rohirrim must promise to kill many gorgûn in return and to leave the Woses alone in the woods and to stop hunting them like beasts. Théoden accepts the offer and they Ride out.
At the end of the hidden road, Ghân takes leave of the Riders with the statement that the wind is changing. Scouts are sent to look ahead and they come back with the news that the two errand-riders of Gondor and their horses were found dead. Hirgon and the red arrow did not reach Denethor.
As they ride past the skirts of Mindolluin toward the Rammas of the Pelennor, Merry notices that Dernhelm has left his place in Elfhelm's éored and has moved up to the rear of the king's guard.
As they reach the field of Gondor, Wídfara also mentions that the wind is changing and that he feels a sea-tang to it. Merry also feels the wind in his face and senses that there is a change.
As lightening strikes, the Riders divide into three units of attack and Théoden calls out in a loud voice:
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
