Stopping Gandalf, who is about to follow after the Black Rider, Pippin explains that the Lord Denethor has lost his mind and has ordered his men to bring wood and oil to make a pyre. Pippin explains that he fears Denethor will kill himself and Faramir who is clinging to life. Pippin begs Gandalf to help.
Gandalf must decide what to do: Follow the Black Rider and attempt to stop him or come to Denethor and Faramir's aid. He knows either situation will result in death should he not choose to help. However, he realizes that he cannot be in both places at once and follows Pippin.
Reaching the Tombs, they hear cries and swords clashing and find Beregond holding the door against the servants bringing torches. Serveral already have fallen and the other servants are calling Beregond a traitor.
Denethor calls to his servants to slay the traitor, but an angry Gandalf rushes up the steps, lifts his hand, and causes Denethor's sword to fly from his hand. Denethor is taken by surprise at this and tells Gandalf to mind his own business, the West has failed, and he and Faramir shall go up in fire.
Gandalf sees the madness of Denethor and rescues the unconscious Faramir from the pyre. Denethor weeps at this and Gandalf tries to encourage Denethor to go out to the battlefield and defend his City. But Denethor laughs in Gandalf's face, reveals a palantir, and says that he has seen all the Enemy's strength. He accuses Gandalf of wishing to rule behind every throne and putting an upstart, a Ranger of the North, in Denethor's place. Denethor wants Gondor to remain as it has been--with the Stewards ruling.
Finally, Denethor grabs a torch, breaks his staff, leaps on the pyre with the palantir, and goes up in flames.
Beregond, Pippin, and Gandalf bring Faramir to the Houses of Healing. They hear a piercing scream from the battlefield and their hearts are filled with hope. Gandalf looks down on the battlefield and realizes the Captain of the Black Riders has been defeated but that deed has cost very dearly. Gandalf instructs Pippin to come with him and that Beregond should report back to the chief of the Guard and explain what has happened. Gandalf recommends Beregond should be allowed to watch over Faramir in the Houses of Healing.
